Hair! 70s! Horror! Poll!
Feb. 27th, 2011 11:55 amYet another Eureka moment of the silly kind! Now, obviously the 70s must have been a hard era for Beatles fans to live through because of the breakup aftermath, split fannish loyalties, musical feuds etc., but one fannish trauma has not yet been suitably explored, to wit, the mystery of how three attractive men could inflict some truly ghastly looks on themselves. (I say three because Ringo, bless him, simply went back to the look he had pre-Beatles and stuck with it. It suits him.) Thankfully, this was only the case for brief periods, but still. There were photos. And we're all still dealing with the shock. In order to do just that, I decided to create a poll asking you, faithful readers, to choose the ghastliest look worn by a former Beatle in the 70s. Of course, I would not ask you to make such a choice uninformed. Below the cut is the evidence of guilt in its full 70s, perm, mullet, pornstache, beardy glory.
Now, George, I appreciate you got rid of the beard which hid those divine cheekbones, but the perm is and moustache combination is, err, not really the best alternative.

Look, Paul, I've come around to regard the full beard of depression and renewal from 1970/1971 as sort of sexy. And I'm okay with the mullet you sported through most of the 70s. But what ON EARTH made Linda even let you out of the house looking like this when you went to L.A. to hang out with John during his Lost Weekend in the mid-70s?

I could nominate the long haired fully bearded Jesus look here, but that's really more a 1969 thing than a 70s one. No, it's John trying to keep the beard at half length and combine it with either pulled back or short hair that make me shudder:
