I was into fantasy, too.:) The "in a galaxy far, far away" preamble is a pretty good indication that we're not dealing with Isaac Asimov here, and honestly, I was bored by the other sci fi classic at that time, 2001, which is usually held up as the intelligant art to George Lucas' pop corn cinema. Otoh Spielberg had me at once with E.T and I sobbed my heart out. Go figure.
Anyway, yes, A New Hope is fantasy, which wasn't a problem, but it seemed awfully black and white to 11 or twelve years old me, because I had just gotten a taste for complicated villains and shades of grey heroes via various historical novels. So it was really the (back then, not now, of course) new twist with the father revelation that made me sit up and think, hold on, this is more complicated than it appeared.
