I'll be spending most of this month (starting with the 7th) in the US due to a combination of attending conferences and travelling with the APs, who haven't been in America for ages (they refused to go as long as Bush was President, whereas yours truly was there repeatedly). Now, my fabulous Dad surprised me with a premature birthday present (my birthday isn't until near the end of September) so I wouldn't have to take my trusty laptop with me to the States. No, instead I'll be taking a shiny new Ipad. Which is why I haven't posted these last two days, being busy learning the ways of Apple (the other one). The Ipad turns out to be a fabulous creature allowing me to use BBC iPlayer (which, zomg, has among other things Second Doctor episodes!) and many other perks, but I haven't figured out yet how to deactivate the autocorrect when writing texts. (This is a problem when you're German and writing in English, because it means it keeps wanting to capitalize various words, or change their spelling, and won't accept me writing them differently.) Also, while there is a Livejournal "app", there is none for Dreamwidth, and the Lj one does not appear to cross post. If you are wise in the ways of the IPad, faithful readers, pray instruct me.

The lady Arsinoe, one of Alexandria's few female philosophers, wise in the ways of medicine as well, has a fatal encounter with a thief who tried to take her daughter hostage. She wakes up to find herself mysteriously in the Alexandria of decades gone, when Cleopatra was still alive... And Arsinoe's parents as well as her later guardian Evander. On command of the Queen, Arsinoe is forced to assist one of Antonius' men, Roman captain Gaius Aecteanus who makes no secret of his dislike of the Graeco-Egyptian culture around him which Arsinoe embodies and drinks far too much when he is not longing for the good old days of the Thirteenth legion, when men were men, before Antony went soft. However, he needs local help to investigate some mysterious killings that could possibly set the multi-ethnic city aflame...

The first is almost Orson Welles' production of Julius Caesar, so I'll do the DW one. The Doctor is an Indian scientist, like Gandhi and Nehru educated in Britain but turning to Independence as a goal after the Amritsar massacre. However, he managed to piss off the leading heads of the Congress Party, the Brits don't trust him either, plus he is haunted by a rumour that he might be the reincarnation of a trickster/destroyer figure in Hindu mythology, so he's travelling the world. Ace is a teenage stowaway from Britain whom he meets on the ocean liner she has been hiding on just ten minutes before it is attacked by a German submarine...

Or at least I love this, because somewhere in the back of my head, Gaius is yelling "Thirteen!" much in the style of Titus Pullo. And I find I cannot quite stop smiling.
