Date: 2012-01-20 08:00 am (UTC)Unfortunately, the media etc did a crazy crazy thing when he died, where they celebrated the heck out of him & everything he did, glossing completely over all the laws he broke, the AIDS crisis, anything that would cast him in a negative light - how could you not mention Iran-Contra?? Which means a lot of people have this Alice-in-Wonderland thru the looking glass crazy distorted idea of him, so yea, lionized unfathomably. Personally, I couldn't be near any US media during that time without rage blackouts. I come more from the US out of Central America crowd cuz it was before I came out, but yea, for anyone actually involved with pretty much any leftwing politics during Reagan hell (or anyone who looks around say at the current economic situation in the US & traces it right back to him), the rage indeed runs deep. As you can see, where given the opportunity, I too need to share my rage, which cannot be textually rendered in full.
Um, I also agree with your original point, that it's unlikely they'd make a film about a powerful man with dementia as the frame. As much as I disliked Thatcher, this seems like yet another way to knock her down with sexism rather than actually engaging with her substantively on her positions. & your comment about Kohl made me laugh (though certainly I hope he does not have a stroke!).
