I've now seen the Christmas special as well, and it has the subplot of Daisy asking for (and getting) a promotion after coming to the realisation she's more than overdue for one, and coming somewhat to terms with her William heritage, which made me happy.

So with you re: the Daily-Mrs. Patmore conflict being the most strongly written storyline of the season!
