Thirty Days of Borgias: Day Six

Why, Borgias/Messy Relationships, Lucrezia/Character Growth, Rodrigo/Religion, Cesare/Brooding Snark, Giulia/Pragmatic Grace and Vanozza/Awesomeness, of course!
Okay, fine. But you know, I don't have an OTP in the usual sense in this show, which isn't surprising since I don't have that many anyway (i.e. pairings in a romantic sense which I prefer with each other to them being with various people). I do love all the intricate relationships the show offers, though, both non-romantic, romantic and sexual. One of the many things I find attractive is that there are all these interesting relationships, not just one. Lucrezia and Cesare with their father and mother respectively, and how I love that Vanozza is not written off or ignored but remains a key figure for her children. The friendship between Lucrezia and Giulia in s1 was such a delightful surprise (hence my primary Borgias icon), and while I missed their a deux scenes in s2, I did appreciate we got a Lucrezia-Giulia-Vanozza team-up (initiated by Giulia, who really lives by her motto from the show premiere that women shouldn't allow men to let them play each other out against each other) and more of Vanozzas relationship with Rodrigo, which isn't actively sexual anymore (though you can tell they still notice each other's attractions, and it was his fault anyway), but so very married with the habit of twenty years and knowing each other inside out. Machiavelli in s2 graduated to Master of Snark and formed another impressive triad with Cesare and Micheletto. Speaking of the later two, they have their own interesting thing going. And this is the first fictional rendering of the Borgias which gets the Lucrezia and Cesare relationship just the way I've always imagined it. (Which means among other things that as opposed to 99% of the fandom I have no desire for it to go further.) Very intense, completely there for each other but actually not ripping each other's cloths off or pining with incestous frustration because they's so completely comfortable with each other. (There is a story re: historical Cesare and Lucrezia which I always thought was the most telling, and no, nothing scandalous, though that's exactly what some biographers found shocking. He was busy conquering the Romagna and earning his fearsome reputation, she was on to her third and final marriage and due to an accident was to have an operation (on her foot, I think), and Cesare stops mid-conquering, pays a visit, holds her hand and distracts her through the operation by making her laugh, and then post operation takes off again being Il Principe. This caused at least one Lucrezia biographer to wonder "but did she not see the bloody shades of Micheletto and her second husband rise behind him?" and wonder how they could be so normal with each other, given that yes, he had her second husband killed whom she tried to save rather desparately. But those were the Borgia siblings for you, and the show's versions are the first I could believe this scene from.
