I share your feelings entirely: most of Season Five was weak, but the finale was great. (Well, Mordred probably deserved a better sword fight to go out on, but convincing sword fights have never really been the show's forte.)

I knew Gwaine was going to die because, well, he's Gwaine and he always dies, not that it stopped me from being upset. I love the whole concept of Camelot passing to Queen Gwen SO MUCH, and having her work out on her own who Emrys is was a nice touch.

Arthur asking Merlin to hold him was one of those scenes that executed differently could have felt hokey as hell but instead made me damn near bawl.

Same here. The other thing Merlin has never really let Arthur know before the last episode is exactly how much he loves him (in whatever sense) and you really see that here.

Aaaaaaand immortal Merlin is canon now! Every Immortal Merlin/returning-or-reincarnated Arthur fic ever can be, too. I just read one or two other reveals and in the middle of feeling sentimental was inappropiately amused that people appear to be sulking over the fact Merlin looks old in the 21st century. Ageism, people, ageism.

LOL. Suddenly I want to go write piles of slash where Arthur comes back and couldn't care less than Merlin has aged a few centuries ...

... but most of all, this means I can finally write that Doctor Who crossover! I kept hoping for one more Geoffrey of Monmouth appearance to work with, but never mind.
