Rarewomen 2013 Letter
Feb. 25th, 2013 10:59 amDear Author,
thank you so much for taking the trouble to write about any of these intriguing women. I appreciate it, and am good with any form you choose, gen, het, slash, any combination thereof. While I usually prefer canon settings, don't feel restrained by that: if the muse compells you to write, say, an Alias space AU, or The Wire In Ancient Egpt, go for it.
(Except for coffee shop and high school AUS. I'd rather not have those.)
The Wire
Kima Greggs, Rhonda Pearlman, Brianna Barksdale, Shardene Innes
A story about any of these ladies would make me happy. If you can manage a combination - say, Kima interrogating Brianna, talking to Ronnie about a case or coming across Shardene in a bar - it would be terrific, but if you feel more inspired to a single character study (for example: we've seen plenty of how boys become soldiers/drug lords, but how was it for a girl, i.e. Brianna? How, after learning about her son's death and the Barksdale empire dwindling to almost nothing, does she manage her life?), I'd love it, too.
Alias
Emily Sloane, Nadia Santos, Irina Derevko, Elena Derevko, Katya Derevko
Emily was one of my favourite characters on the show, and she hardly ever shows up in fic, so anything involving her would be welcome - backstory, her relationship with any other charaters during the first two seasons, whatever strikes your fancy. If you can manage something covering the time between Arvin telling her the truth in the s1 finale and their reunion in The Getaway, I'd be over the moon. How did she process finding out her husband was an evil overlord (tm)? The long con on both the Alliance and the CIA that Sloane played in the first half of s2 depended on Emily having the courage and the resolution to even go through with amputating her finger. What was it like for her?
If you can't write Emily: Nadia was another favourite of mine. Elena/Sophia raised her (and later used her), Irina seems to have consciously avoided looking for her and didn't make any attempt (that we know of) to look for a cure to her coma later, Katya hits it off with her immediately but also uses her - how does each woman see her, how does Nadia see them?
Marvel
Abigail Brand, Ichiki Hisako
Ever since Warren Ellis' follow up to "Astonishing X-Men" casually revealed Abigail Brand has Hisako's phone number, I wanted to read more interaction between them. Anything from Brand trying to recruit Hisako for SWORD to texting about possible presents for Hank, or whatever else strikes your fancy.
15th Century RPF
Margaret of York, Cecily Neville Duchess of York, Anne Neville
Margaret as the survivor of her family (and arguably the one succeeding at ruling a country where her brothers got themselves killed or partied themselves in an early grave) has always intrigued me. Any look at her during any stage of her life would be great, but my two favourite periods for exploration would be either her hosting Edward and Richard during the later's brief exile and brokering the reconciliation with George & return to England, or Margaret after Richard's death, picking up the pieces for the House of York, ruling for her stepdaughter and making occasional trouble for Henry Tudor into the bargain.
If you can't manage Margaret: exploration of Cecily and/or Anne would be great to read, too. They were aunt and niece before they become mother-in-law and daughter-in-law; Cecily must have had her share of Neville ambition yet never became a queen herself; she outlived all her sons and several of her daughters. Anne did become Queen and died young, but not before losing her only son. How did they relate to each other?
Spartacus
Laeta, Lucretia
Laeta is new but already sympathetic and intriguing to me. Lucretia has become one of my all time favourite female villains. A character study of either would be superb.
Like most readers, I imagine, I'm not fond of character bashing, and I despise shipping-related feuds. This doesn't mean you can't explore flaws or let any of the women - who are canonically very opinionated, not to mention that some of them are responsible for their share of deaths - express themselves in a hostile fashion. I think you know the difference between, say, Hisako reminding Brand of what Brand did to Pjotr Rasputin or Hisako venting your opinion that Brand/Beast should never have become canon. With that in mind, THANK YOU ONCE MORE for writing a story.
