I hear the call of another meme...
Jun. 5th, 2013 07:30 pm...spotted at various places. Bear in mind that just as I don't 'ship that many pairings in the romantic sense (though of course if I'm familiar with the fandom, chances are I like some of the relationships therein, be they friendly or adverserial), I don't have that many DO NOT WANT anti OTPs, either. Some, but not many. So I'll have to default on that option a lot of the time.
Give me a show/movie/fandom and I'll tell you:

Date: 2013-06-06 11:00 am (UTC)my favourite male character: Quark. Used to be Garak during original broadcast, but upon rewatches the Ferengi overtook him and retained that first place in my fannish affections ever after.
my favourite book/season/etc: really hard. Perhaps season 2, but there are days when it's season 4 (though I still think the sudden Klingon plot is way too blatant a plot device to excuse adding Michael Dorn). Season 6 would be it if not for: a) the way Odo's behaviour is swept completely under the table after the end of the Second Occupation and Kira having no trouble with it at all after some off screen conversations and getting together with Odo in the same season in which she condemms her mother as a despicable collaborator because Meru developed Stockholm Syndrome with Dukat, making Kira look like an utter hypocrite, and b) Dukat going from a three dimensional character into an Evil Madman Who Evils, And In Conclusion Evil.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): depends on my mood. The Wire for Garak and Garak/Bashir, Trials and Tribble-Ations for best Trek/Trek crossover ever and beautiful ensembleness, Blood Oath for Jadzia Dax (and her musketeers from TOS), House of Quark for best culture clash (Klingon/Ferengi) and my guy Quark finding an utterly Quark-like way to win the day, The Visitor for the Siskos at their most poignant. Oh, and Duet and In the Pale Moonlight best distillation of what makes DS9 uniquely awesome.
my favourite cast member: Armin Shimmerman (saw him at a convention where he did an awesome Richard III for us, too!), followed by Siddig el Fadil aka Alexander Siddig.
my favourite relationship: Quark & Dax versus Garak & Bashir versus Quark & Rom. Also Kira & Dukat until the middle of s6 because then, see above.
a character I'd die defending: Quark.
a character I just can't sympathize with: um, none? The Sisko and I took a while get warm, but nowadays I'm really fond of him.
a character I grew to love: Michael Eddington, take a bow.
my anti otp: none. I mean, I wasn't into Kira's relationships with Bareil and Shakaar, but I wasn't hostile towards them, either. It was just part of the show.
Ezri/Julian was very sloppily and hastily executed, but not ooc for either of them given the circumstances, and we're not supposed to believe they're happily ever after, so it makes no difference to me.

Date: 2013-06-06 11:02 am (UTC)my favourite female character: Darla.
my favourite male character: Connor.
my favourite book/season/etc: season 4 in terms of sheer quality and emotional impact from start to finish. S2 would be if not for the sudden fall of quality after Redefinition and massive mood switch after Disharmony. S3 has some stellar eps but sucks as a whole. S1 has the rookie season unevenness though I love it a lot. I like s5 muchly, too, but there the big arc plot depends on a few too many out of nowhere twists, so again, uneven.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): err. Really hard to decide. Perhaps Darla for mythic epicness and Smile Time for sheer hilarity (with a dark undercurrent - this is also the ep where Gunn essentially sells his soul)
my favourite cast member: Julie Benz.
my favourite relationship: in terms of friendship, the late s1 Angel & Cordy & Wesley OT3. Romantic/Sexually, Angel/Darla, accept no substitutes. Family, Angel & Connor, who break my heart.
a character I'd die defending: Connor. Wrote the posts to prove it.
a character I just can't sympathize with: none, really. Everyone had their moments, including and especially the antagonists.
a character I grew to love: Angel himself. I was Angel neutral on BTVS but grew really fond of him on his own show (the post about how that happened is somewhere, too).
my anti otp: Angel/Cordelia. Mainly because I prefered her as his no-nonsense-accepting BFF and hated the way canon changed her once the romance kicked in. Now I have seen Angel/Cordelia handled plausibly in fanfic written pre s3, but in show canon? Bleh.

Date: 2013-06-06 12:57 pm (UTC)my favourite male character: Rodrigo.
my favourite book/season/etc: overall, season 1.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): Nessuno the season 1 finale. Unless I'm in the mood for high tragedy, in which case it's the s2 finale.
my favourite cast member: Holiday Grainger, going from a one episode not that interesting villainess in Merlin to an awesome leading role. Also, strictly in terms of him as an actor, Jeremy Irons.
my favourite relationship: used to be the friendship between Giulia and Lucrezia in s1 and early s2, but alas, then they shared scenes no longer. These days, it's the old-married-divorced-remarried-emotionally-that-is-coupleness of Rodrigo and Vannozza on the one hand, and the mess that's Rodrigo's relationship with his children on the other. I'm also tentatively eyeing Rodrigo and his new Jewish buddy and special agent, but that depends on whether the season and show finale doesn't do a U-Turn on them.
a character I'd die defending: Err. These are fictional versions of one of the most notorious bunch of Renaissance characters, so, um, I would probably die. Anyway, the fandom is crazy about Cesare and Lucrezia, so no defense is necessary there, so I'm going with my corrupt yet also believing Renaissance Pope, who also has that Londo Mollari thing going where he can make you want to slap him and hug him in the same episode.
a character I just can't sympathize with: the show is actually good in making most people understandable. Even Juan who goes way beyond the moral horizon and insufferableness in s2, yet also gets a few tragic moments.
a character I grew to love: unexpectedly? Giulia Farnese and Micheletto the assassin.
my anti otp: I really wish they hadn't gone there with Cesare and Lucrezia. Not because I'm anti canon incest; because I thought their relationship was more interesting before that, as an intense and supportive sibling relationship. Lovers-who-can't-by-together pales in comparison.

Date: 2013-06-06 12:59 pm (UTC)Ha ha, reluctance to volunteer to die for the Borgias is EXTREMELY RATIONAL.
I need to get to season 2 of this show sometime soon.

Date: 2013-06-06 01:07 pm (UTC)my favourite male character: ha. First it was Avon, predictably. Then Avon was caught in the wave of my general disillusionment with fandom's tendency to whitewash morally ambiguous characters and make all their darker actions someone else's fault, so then it was Blake. Now it's both of them. Second favourite is always Vila, of course.
my favourite book/season/etc: season 2. Despite having Travis Minor in it.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): Pressure Point vying with City on the Edge of Forever. I also have a soft spot for Sand from season 2 because Tanith Lee and Servalan.
my favourite cast member: thanks to
my favourite relationship: the original B/A, which is not very original of me, but can't be helped. Also Avon/Servalan in s3 and s4. ("It's an old wall, Avon. It waits.")
a character I'd die defending: not a category that applies, I find.
a character I just can't sympathize with: I do feel sorry for Tarrant when his brother dies, and also in the show finale, but other than that...
a character I grew to love: Vila. Bless.
my anti otp: don't have one here.

Date: 2013-06-06 01:31 pm (UTC)my favourite male character: Arvin Sloane.
my favourite book/season/etc: season 4, bucking the fannish trend. I mean, I like s2 as well, but I really love s4. (Which is where the show should have ended, imo.)
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): really hard to say. Vying for contention: The Getaway (because in it Sloane manages to pull a fast one on the Alliance and the CIA), Truth Takes Time (because it's tragic and beautiful, the scenes between Sydney and Emily and Arvin and Emily kill me, and Irina is awesome, too), Breaking Point (because Jack, Sloane and Vaughn teaming up to save Sydney is awesome, and it has one of my favourite Jack and Arvin scenes when Jack operates on him after the rescue while trying to figure out why Sloane would save his life), Detente (because Sydney and Nadia as a team are fantastic, and the Sydney and Sloane scenes are among my favourites re: their relationship), Another Mr. Sloane (Joel Grey as Arvin Clone! Jack 'n Arvin in the men's room! Sydney asking Sloane to go back to Rambaldi, aware of what this could mean! Syd, Nadia and Sloane field mission! Muller sphere freak out! So yes, I like this one a lot), In Dreams (WHY DIDN'T RON RIFKIN EVER GET AN EMMY WHY - that's the one where he goes through his memories and has awesome scenes with Emily, Nadia and one with Jack), and Before The Flood (everyone is great in it, except poor Nadia who only gets to be a zombie, but still - this should have been the show finale).
my favourite cast member: Victor Garber and Ron Rifkin for acting veteran awesomeness; Jennifer Garner for team spirit and great personal charm in all the interviews I never saw/read and when she's presenting Oscars.
my favourite relationship: Jack Bristow and Arvin Sloane vying with Sydney Bristow and Arvin Sloane vying with Nadia/Everyone. But in the end probably the Bristows and Sloane.
a character I'd die defending: with the understanding that I'm not excusing any of the awful things he's done (why is why my ideal show finale, i.e. s4, would have had him end up in prison, but also having Jack's affection back and Sydney's belief that he is capable of atonment), Arvin Sloane.
a character I just can't sympathize with: Michael Vaughn, save for a very few eps. Sorry, Vaughn.
a character I grew to love: unexpectedly? Katya Derevko. At first she was simply Not!Irina Because Lena Olin Is Unavailable, but then she grew on me in her own right.
my anti otp: Syd/Vaughn in season 3. During the other seasons, I wasn't into the pairing as a shipper but okay with it as a part of canon. But in s3, where the dreaded term "soulmate" was spoken, they were awful together.

Date: 2013-06-06 01:42 pm (UTC)my favourite female character: Uhura, unless we're counting the movies as well, in which case it's Saavik.
my favourite male character: Spock.
my favourite book/season/etc: can't choose between s1 and s2. S2 has Chekov, but also already reduced screen time for the ensemble when compared to the big three.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): Journey to Babel because Spock's parents vying with The Trouble with Tribbles, because hilarity. Also ensembleness.
my favourite cast member: having read everyone's memoirs and been to a couple of conventions - either George Takei or Walter Koenig. Can't decide between these two.
my favourite relationship: Kirk/Enterprise. A lot of other Captains in other sci fi sagas (looking at you, BSG) were supposedly married to their ships, but Kirk (Kirk Prime, that is) is the only one who really sold that idea to me. Kirk's "My God, Bones, what have I done?" when the Enterprise blows up in ST III is so much more meaningful than Bill Adama's drunken self pitying rages in s4, I can't tell you.
a character I'd die defending: doesn't apply for this show.
a character I just can't sympathize with: hm, there isn't one?
a character I grew to love: can't think of a surprise sneak up in love. I mean, I had phases of not liking Kirk, but that came after originally liking him, and evened itself out with liking him again. Not really the same.
my anti otp: don't have one in TOS. Wait, I was really against Vonda McIntyre letting Saavik and David Marcus hook up in the novelizations of Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock, because why, and also, ugh, David Marcus. But only on screen canon counts, and so that didn't happen.

Date: 2013-06-06 01:49 pm (UTC)my favourite male character: Holmes.
my favourite book/season/etc: only had one so far.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): while Heroine, the finale, was epic, I think so far it's Snow Angels, because not only are Joan and Sherlock in lovely detecting duo form but there is Pam the awesome snow trucker and Ms. Hudson!
my favourite cast member: I love them all.
my favourite relationship: my great and pleasant surprise was that there is more than one to love. The Holmes & Watson one is my favourite m & f relationship on current tv, full stop, but I also adore the ones between Holmes & Gregson, and Holmes & Bell, and the ones between Alfredo & Watson and Alfredo & Holmes.
a character I'd die defending: don't see a need so far. I mean, yes, there is the "Watson can never be a woman" crowd, but they have already been defeated by sheer awesomeness, so there is no need to die.
a character I just can't sympathize with: Alistair. I think I'm supposed to love him because Roger Reese, but he didn't do much for me.
a character I grew to love: to my great surprise because of all his recent other incarnations, Sherlock Holmes.
my anti otp: I really don't want Joan and Sherlock to hook up romantically, and I'm confident they won't.

Date: 2013-06-06 07:09 pm (UTC)my favourite female character: Kima. I like Rhonda and Beadie too, but Kima it is.
my favourite male character: Lester. Followed by, to my surprise, Pres.
my favourite book/season/etc: season 4 is the best but also the most heartbreaking. S1 or s3 are probably easier to rewatch (having just marathoned the show for the first time, I wouldn't know yet. So, hm, either 3 or 4?
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): The Middle Ground. So many good elements: Avon and Stringer love and betray each other, Avon gives Cutty the money, the Omar and Brother Mouzoune team-up is suitably epic, Bunny Colvin makes his last desperate pitch (showing Carcetti Hamsterdam).
my favourite cast member: I don't really have an opinion. In the sense of "following this actor in other projects", probably Idris Elba, though I had seen him before in "Ultraviolet". (Also I knew Aiden Gillen from his star turn as Stuart Allen Jones in Queer as Folk - the original UK one. ) Dominic West was chillingly good in Appropriate Adult which I watched last winter.
my favourite relationship: probably Jimmy & Bunk.
a character I'd die defending: um, there is no need due to the type of show?
a character I just can't sympathize with: also not that type of show, it's pretty good about giving everyone their moments and points of view, including Rawles. The s5 newspaper management plus the quote faking reporter are rare exceptions, and that's why they feel less real and more "David Simon has a score to settle". So I could pick them, except I never felt I was supposed to sympathize with them even for moment.
a character I grew to love: Pres. Great character development over several seasons there.
my anti otp: don't have one.

Date: 2013-06-07 12:55 pm (UTC)There is a persistent rumour in fandom that Paul Darrows, um, interesting performance in Timelash was to pay Colin Baker back for Bayban. I always wonder what would have happened if they'd cast Colin Baker in B7 again and the Great Ham War had been allowed to escalate ...

Date: 2013-06-09 04:42 pm (UTC)my favourite female character: CJ. No explanation required. :)
my favourite male character: Jed Bartlett. Perhaps because he isn't too good to be true, he does have his petty and dark sides in addition to all the good ones, and I find him interesting and compelling. And he's a geek who can have a soul searching chat with a Republican candidate for his succession while they're eating ice cream, and he has great taste in wives and best friends.
my favourite book/season/etc: hard to pick, but it might be s4, because it has the most Andi in it, whom I like a lot, and also Amy (ditto), and the reelection campaign is fun, and I also like Will. So yes. s4.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): I know it's utterly unoriginal, but: Two Cathedrals. Because Jed arguing with God in Latin trumps everything. Also Mrs. Landingham.
my favourite cast member: must I choose one? Evidentally. Richard Schiff enobles all he's in, and Alison Janney should be in more, but Martin Sheen was such a trouper that he continued to play Willard in Coppola's Apocalypse Now after having had a heart attack because by then Francis C. had staked all his money on that film and the studio had long withdrawn support and basically Martin Sheen saved Francis Coppola's butt. In the Philippines. After a heart attack. So, Martin Sheen.
my favourite relationship: Toby and Jed Bartlett, and it frustrates me to this day there is so little fanfic about it because I want someone to write the epic post series story that shows them having it out after the pardon and before the apparantly well state of affairs from the flash forward.
a character I'd die defending: I don't think I'd have to, everyone seems to have their partisans. :) Unless it's Andi, who got some unkind comments at crack_van for not accepting Toby's proposal? I mean, I love Toby, but seriously, I could so understand why she said no.
a character I just can't sympathize with: can't think of someone. I mean, I never quite got a grip on Matt Santos, but I didn't dislike him or anything. I just didn't get a sense of his personality beyond "good future President".
a character I grew to love: Josh. It was definitely not love at first sight. But it happened.
my anti otp: it took me a while to warm up to Josh/Donna. I mean, obvious rapport was obvious, but he was her boss, and that kind of thing always takes me aback for a while. But the show allowed her to change jobs and gave her an arc and that removed my problem, so in the end I wanted them together. In conclusion, I don't have an anti otp for this show.

Date: 2013-07-16 04:54 am (UTC)my favourite female character: Buffy herself. (Used to be Cordelia during the first three seasons, then it became Buffy and remained that way forever and ever.)
my favourite male character: Andrew Wells. No, really, this one is tricky. It used to be Giles during the first three seasons. While I liked Spike just fine (still do), I was never in love. Same for Xander, though due to no action of their own but solely (visible) fandom developing such a hate-on for Xander in recent years, Xander has risen in my affection as a result because I'm built like this, and Spike has a bit sunk. (It's not him! It's fandom!) And I did love Jonathan, but for some reason, his treacherous guestage of a friend remains the male for whom my favouring affection remains most solid.
my favourite book/season/etc: season 5, all in all. Because of Buffy and Dawn. I have a thing for sibling stories.
my favourite episode (if it's a tv show): Restless. I've written the meta to prove it.
my favourite cast member: ASH is probably the one I saw most of outside of Buffy. It would be unfair to count Armin Shimmerman, since my affection for him is Star Trek based and glowing.
my favourite relationship: Buffy and Dawn, see above. I also love Buffy & Faith, or Buffy/Faith, either variation.
a character I'd die defending: Buffy. The first BTVS story I ever wrote was a Buffy pov just after Wrecked had broadcast, because my but was the fannish hostility burning.
a character I just can't sympathize with: Actually, I have moments of feeling for everyone, including Adam. Well, except Caleb who is the least imaginative last minute patriarchal villain ever used by an exhausted team of writers. Willow is probably my least favourite of the regulars, but I still feel for her at various points, strongly.
a character I grew to love: Angel, though not on BTVS. It happened on his own show.
my anti otp: don't have one on this show.
