The Night of the Doctor

Aka the Minisode prequel for The Day of The Doctor. Starring... well, I wouldn't spoil it for the world.

"Charley, C'Rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly..." Did Moffat just make the entire Big Finish canon for the Eighth Doctor screen canon as well? Awwwwwwww. Also: never thought I would see Eight on screen again, and am ever glad I was not spoiled for this. And now we've seen all of the Doctors regenerate on screen. Well, not John Hurt yet, but I take it this will happen in the special. And you've got to hand it to the Moff: he really has those minisodes down to an art form. (A double edged sword, this: some of his minisodes starring Amy and River are exactly what I thought had been missing in the respective seasons.) The way Cas reacts to "Time Lord" tells us all about how devastating the war has become, with both sides being seen as monsters, and why it has to be stopped by any means.

I loved it! I refused to rewatch the movie again, but this is what the Eighth Doctor should have been like! I suppose I can't really use a minisode as my Eighth Doctor instalment of the Doctor-by-Doctor project, so I'm still trying to work out an audio to pick. (I quite fancy Mary Shelley and the chess-playing Turk, if I can get it.)

It was a terrifically wonderful surprise to wake up to, along with the news that Tom Baker and Lalla Ward are going to record some audios together.

Has Hell frozen over entirely do you think?

The Mary Shelley and the chess playing Turk story was alright, but a bit of a let down for me as there was a a sudden change of villain motivation midway. If you want to start on the Eigth Doctor audios, I'd go with Storm Warning, which is one of the earliest anyway (though the Doctor makes a Mary Shelley reference - they've been planning to use her for a while, it seems), it introduces Charley, who goes on to become one of the main Big Finish Companions, and it has Blake Gareth Thomas as one of the guest stars. Also it bothers to come up with an alien culture that's not an Earth culture in costumes, and Paul McGann is really good in it.

It also seems to be a third of the price, not that this really matters!

Incidentally, I notice that the Doctor didn't appear to mention Grace, so maybe he shares my views on what is and isn't canon...

PS Have ordered Storm Warning. Big Finish apparently have a special offer on Eighth Doctor stories to celebrate yesterday's event.

This short minisode did more for McGann's doctor than teh entire movie did. I'm so glad he got script that really showed what he could offer.
