In which there are guest stars I probably should know but don't, and also I'm wondering about the behavioral code of judges.

Incidentally, I find I like the warehouse-for-office look. And not just because it makes me feel a duel between Highlander tyle immortal could take place at any moment. (This is what tv has taught me abandoned warehouses are for.) I also like the opening scene paralleling Alicia with Diane in their respective firms. Only while both deal with arguing associates, Alicia has Cary still in share and support mode as a partner, whereas Diane has to deal with a Will who thinks L & G (btw, was amused his cool initials speaking thing doesn't impress mobster lawyers) should be a Willtatorship and that he needs to prove how tough he is post Alicia departure by hiring the most ruthless lawyer available to replace her. Which brings me to the first of the guest stars who gave me the impression that he's probably, as often in this show, played by someone well known, with the accent switches sounding like an insider gag because of hte casting, only I couldn't recognize him. Explain, oh readers? I'm sure I'll be facepalming as soon as someone tells me who he was, but for now, I can't place him. Anyway, the character made me mainly think two things:

1) Diane, I'm totally on your side, but I have to point out that you've had Mr. Bishop as your client for years now. Therefore, you present high level organized crime, same as Mr. Playing Mind Games With Kalinda here. Which brings me to

2) Here we go again. Methinks after Blake and Nick, this is the next attempt to give Kalinda a story featuring a morally shady male character who is her antagonist but with whom she's also supposed to have sexual tension. Let me just say the precedents make me sceptical re: how this is going to work out, though in this particular episode, nothing objectionable happened.

The Jackie subplot was yet another instance of Ineffectual!Eli, but in as far as Jackie herself was concerned, it was a good character outing, showcasing ruthlessness, smarts and ongoing issues. That her husband, the late Judge (btw, I think that's the first time we hear something about who the late Florrick Senior was, right?), cheated on her (with an ongoing two years long affair, no less) makes for an obvious compare and contrast to Alicia, which fits with Jackie having done the traditional thing of bearing the adultery, inwardly seething and going for payback (from the "other woman", not her late husband) years later.

Meanwhile, the Judge in the case of the week is an old aquaintance for the viewers, but this is the first time he's not only acting benevolently towards Alicia but, at the end of the episode, asking her out for a date. Which begs the question: is he allowed to do that? With him as an active judge and her as a lawyer who will inevitably appear in his courtroom again? Shouldn't there be some rule about active judges and lawyers? i mean, even Will's socializing via basket ball games came back to bit him in the whole disbarment storyline two seasons ago. My other thought when watching the final scene was: poor Alicia, because leaving aside she's not interested, this can't end well for her. No matter how gently she lets him down, that judge is bound to resent her for it. Which will inevitably make things awkward the next time he judges one of her cases. (Which is why there should be a rule forbidding judges to hit on lawyers, if there isn't one already!)

In other news: Florick & Agos won this case, and I hope the money will help poor fired Zayeed because I doubt he'll get another job again under these circumstances. I couldn't help but notice that Diane's line when she and Will visited the warehouse office (first time they did that, instead of Alicia & Co. going to L & G) to discuss the money is her acknwolledging the very parallels between her and Alicia (and Will & Cary) which Will so far has vehemently rejected.

I thought the way the judge specifically said "don't take this the wrong way" was intended to mean this is NOT a pick-up line, but about a non-romantic angle, in this case a work angle from his earlier talk with Alicia about setting up her own firm.

I am hoping that Will gets eaten by a bear, but I will settle for badly beaten by the Irish mob too.

The new attorney is being played by Jason O'Mara, who is Irish but has spent several years pretending to be American in a succession of mediocre network TV roles. (No, I still haven't forgiven the U.S. Life On Mars.) I think this may be the first time he's been allowed to use his natural accent on TV, so possibly that was the joke? (Not having seen the ep...)
