I had noticed s2 character Jane hadn't been in the Christmas special, but considering this episode introduced Sister Winifred, I'm assuming Jane stays gone, which is a shame; I'd liked her. Though I'm sure I'll like Winifred as well.

This was a Chummy episode, and while Chummy returning to work as a midwife was a predictable outcome (after all, they're not going to let go such a popular character, and it would be increasingly difficult to tie her into the main plots if she remains a civilian), I really liked how we got there. It's not that Chummy isn't happy in her marriage or being a mother, but working as a nurse and midwife is what she's best at and what gives her satisfaction, and so she needs to do that as well.

(I also suspect Shelagh will return to the job sooner or later, though probably later if she really is pregnant - otoh my guess is she's not - that it's a case of wish as father of the thought, and that she wants to be not least because she still feels secretly a bit guilty, and getting pregnant would confirm to her she made the right decision in leaving the order and marrying.)

The main case of the week underlined to me that it's the "not knowing" that's worst in situations of illnesses; once the mother knew what exactly the children were suffering from, she could deal, instead of blaming herself. I swear that by the time this show finishes, I'll feel like an expert in birthing difficulties and infant sickness. :)

Both PC Peter Noakes and Dr. Turner truly are princes among men, what with Peter supporting Chummy the way he does and Dr. Turner taking Sister Monica Joan and her Queen Anne era medicine book seriously. Looks like Jenny's Alec is potentially a good one, too, what if the volunteering for the band.

Speaking of: I suspect we'll see attitude!girl again, and also that she's been fibbing when declaring she has a cold. My wild guess is that she does indeed have a pair of lungs and will turn into a 60s pop star in a few years.

Generally though it's been lovely to see all these characters again and I'll be able to follow their adventures now for seven weeks more.
