Today I relistened to The Doomsday Quatrain, a 7th Doctor audio, because I was feeling too something to sit and read. But then I was feeling too fiddly to sit and listen so I started playing Wrath of the Righteous again, because there's an Achievement I skipped on Core and I'll have to replay past defending Defenders Heart to have another go at it. But then the audio finished and I didn't start another one and I got stuck playing Wrath on a difficulty I do not find fun replaying the bit I have done So Many Times so I was actually bored. And then it was morning.

Somewhere in there I formed the impression that The Doomsday Quatrain doesn't have much going on except The Twist, and that the elements of the story do not support each other, so it's kind of three things in a sack. Okay, the racism and violence parts from the two sets of aliens fit together. I just never did see why the guy on the cover was in it. Maybe I missed the good bits by replaying the game. But mostly I was not fascinated.

I'm also rereading the Murderbot series. It's action with an unusual and surprising protagonist with a lot of the usual signifiers of Hero who actively refuses a lot of the other parts. It gets blown up a lot, thinks it is bad at its job, and considers its fighting style to be Throw Self At Other SecUnits and see which one is repairable after. It keeps saying it would rather watch media but doing complicated corporate espionage and client retrieval. It's about asserting personhood in societies where slavery is normalised and the well meaning neighbours are often clueless. There's a lot going on there. Good to read. Shall go see if I read more this morning.

I finished my reread of Bleach and I've now watched through episode 273, which I think means I've watched about 80 episodes of Bleach in a couple of weeks. Unhinged behaviour. I think for the most part the animation of the lust arc was pretty good! Captured a lot of the feeling of reading it, though it was faintly amusing they didn't show the exact moment of Ichigo stabbing Ishida, which blunted that impact a little. It had not ever occurred to me before that Ulquiorra's final attack on Ichigo was because he was moved by Orihime desperately wanting Ichigo not to kill Ishida, but I feel like that's the implication in the anime, and I'm willing to internalise that interpretation of it. It certainly works with the things Ulquiorra says just before he fades away (oh man, and with Orihime stepping forward to try to grab his hand a moment too late, that always gets me; tbh the arc is equally good for Ulquiorra/Orihime or Ichigo/Orihime).

Back to the rest of the fights and blergh Yammy. Not that I dislike what the manga does with Yammy, but the thing with this whole arc being so long in the manga and yet the anime expands it even more is that sometimes the anime gives an entire fight scene to something briefly touched over in the original and it's often kind of boring.

Like everyone else on the planet I have now seen KPop Demon Hunters. It's cute! I see why half a dozen people I follow on Tumblr are now gaga for it. It commits to its premise 100%. Sony animation is doing some real interesting stuff and making some fun choices.

I never know what to expect on Oregon Country Fair weekend. On the one hand, a lot of vendors, both art and food, are out in Veneta. So theoretically, that's fewer folks to split the sales pie. On the other hand, the customers may also be out there as well--or they may be all here at Market because the crowds (and the hippies) are all gone. It's a toss-up. I've had really good days and really terrible ones. The only way to find out which is to show up.

So this sunny sunflowery Saturday found me, slightly bleary and only a little late, setting up my booth on the Park Blocks. Lots of empty spaces, including the one right beside my. Lots of new vendors, too. You're guaranteed a space this weekend.

My first sale comes at 9 am, as I'm preparing to leave for Farmer's Market; second one is a quarter to 10 after I get back. She asks whether it's okay to sell before official opening--it isn't at Farmer's Market. I explain that they've had issues with people coming earlier and earlier to get first dibs on fresh produce, to the point that it was interfering with vendors' ability to get set up. So they have a hard start time, and you can get written up for selling early. Here on our side of the street, things are more relaxed. As long as you're ready to sell, you can be open whenever.

At least one of my customers says she comes down specifically to avoid the usual crowds. Several recognize my work from Tsunami Bookstore. One lady spots the animal banks, tells her companions that she bought them for her grandkids nearly 30 years ago. Then proceeds to buy a brontosaur and stegosaur for her great grandkids.

My friend Carleen comes in with a sad story--one of the plates from their anniversary set cracked. Can't figure out why, unless it's because the bottom is a little too thick. I happen to have one in exactly that size and pattern in the restock box, so replace it free of charge. (I stand behind my work.) And then the friend that came down to Market with her decides to buy her husband a cereal bowl, and maybe one for herself, and by the time she's finished, she has a set of four plus a salmon painted mug.

Had a nice talk on my glazing process with a young woman who goes on to tell me she's the studio tech for the community college in Coos Bay. I give her my card and call her attention to all the resources on this blog. (If you're reading this, Hi! I didn't get your name...)

A woman introduces herself as the daughter of Mildred Wasserman, a potter I knew from my Craft Center days. She was a retired nurse from Alabama who eventually set up a studio in her basement, even sold at Market for a year or two with Kathy Lee, who went on to share her booth with me when Mildred opted out. They're both passed away now; it was lovely to call them to mind. Daughter is there with her son, who says he remembers me too--he used to come in to the Center with grandma when he was six or seven, to play in the clay.

Talked with people from all over the country: Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey, two different folks from Virginia. Some of them are trusting to their carry-on bags to get their pottery home, others take a card with my website, and the assurance that I'd be happy to ship their pots to them.

I turn the second page of my sale book just before 3 pm, but don't make any sales on page 3. Doesn't matter, we're still over $900 for the day. And I didn't have to drive to Veneta.

Wakey wakey

I have my alarm set for 6 am on Saturdays, to make sure I leave for Market by 7:00. I rarely need it, though; I'll wake up some time around 5:30 desperate to pee, and then there's no point in going back to bed, is there?

This morning I was up even earlier, about 5:20, and once nature was satisfied, I went out to the studio to cover some bowls, so I could trim them tonight. Only a dozen toddlers, and eight catfood dishes that just needed smoothing and stamping. They were all at the perfect consistency, and I was up early, so I figured, Why not trim them now and get it over with? Then I could fire off the bisque kiln that's been loaded since Thursday and come home to no studio responsibilities.

So here's Frank, barefoot, shirtless, patchwork surfer-baggy-style sleeping shorts, trimming bowls in the studio. No glasses, terribly near-sighted, reminds me of all those blindfold throwing challenges on ceramics social media. I can barely make out the clock hands to see what time it's getting, but that's fine, I'm just about finished at five 'til six, go turn off the alarm before it wakes Denise. Come back, still barefoot, and go outside to squint at the electric meter before starting the kiln.

And feel something rubbing against my ankles.

Yep, Raj the tuxedo kitty is up too, and wants his breakfast. Follows me into the studio while I hunt for scissors to open the new bag of cat food, figure-eights around my ankles as I cautiously barefoot it out to his bowl in the carport, insisting on his morning pets before tucking in.

Come back to the bedroom to find these two blissed out in my side of the bed.

I'm so jealous.

First apple crisp of the season!

Looks like we're going to get a bunch of Gravensteins this year, Pippins likewise. Didn't have the time or oomph to build a pie crust, so I default to my Grandma's super-simple Apple Crisp recipe.

Apple Crisp

5-6 medium baking apples--Gravensteins, Granny Smith, etc.--cored and sliced.

1 cup flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1 large egg, unbeaten
1 T water
1/3 cup melted butter
Dusting of cinnamon

Lay apples evenly in a greased baking dish--9x13" is fine, I have this 12" diameter baker I made specifically for crisps.

Whisk together dry ingredients, then add egg and water. Mix with fork until crumbly. Mixture doesn't have to be evenly mixed: big lumps, powdery bits, all okay. Spread over top of the apples, drizzle with butter, dust with cinnamon. You'll note that the apples aren't sugared in this recipe. If you're dealing with early, very green apples, as I was, you might want to add 1/4 cup sugar to the apples before applying the topping.

Bake 30-40 minutes at 350° F.

Two days ago, Twice and Blackpink both had comebacks on the same day: Twice's "This is for" and Blackpink's "뛰어(JUMP)" (links go to the videos, so as not to spam your feed with two embedded videos).

Blackpink's song is a 1-song single, per YG's strategy of keeping Blinks starved for new music from Blackpink, while Twice's song is part of a 14-song album, keeping with JYP's strategy of giving Once as much music as they could possibly want from Twice. I prefer the JYP strategy — at first I was a bigger fan of Blackpink than of Twice, but eventually I got tired of waiting for new songs from Blackpink.

Two interesting things I noticed:

  • Twice Jeongyeon has had difficulty meeting the ridiculous weight standards imposed on K-pop idols (i.e. still not fat by any measure), so in recent comebacks Twice's stylists have started dressing everyone but Jeongyeon in midriff-baring tops. I don't know if this was done at the company's request or at Jeongyeon's, but they did it again this time.
  • Blackpink's song actually includes the English lyric "Are you not entertained?"

1. We had originally been planning to go to Disneyland this morning, but last night I was just feeling tired and suggested we skip our weekend trip since we're going to a show (Paul F. Thompkins' Varietopia again) tomorrow already, and just have one stay at home day. Well, turned out to be for the best because apparently JD Vance is at Disneyland this weekend and so not only is there extremely heightened security inside and protests outside, but the thought of being at the park at the same time as him is a bummer and would just ruin the trip. So we'll just wait and go sometime this week. It's not like we haven't been recently lol.

2. Instead of going to the farmers market or Disneyland, our usual Saturday morning choices, we walked up to a local bagel place and got fancy bagels. We each got two half bagels with different toppings. She got the laika (smoked salmon, cream cheese, pickled red onions, cucumber, capers, and dill) and the scarlett (cream cheese, lightly grilled tomatoes, lemon zest, and chili flakes), and I got the mia (avocado, pickled red onions, chili flakes, and cilantro) and the pre-jam (cream cheese, peaches, honey, and mixed berries). We also got a yuzu strawberry lemonade ice tea and a vanilla orange latte. Everything was so good!

They always have super long lines on the weekends so we've been curious but I'd never been before. Carla's been a couple times on weekdays, when it's not as crowded, but she'd only gotten the scarlett before and hadn't tried anything else. They have online ordering but I didn't know what time Carla would wake up, so I didn't put in an order early, and by the time she woke up around 9:30, there were no more order slots, so we just walked up, but the line wasn't bad yet (maybe fifteen minutes or so and then a bit more of a wait to get the order). Definitely worth it, though.

3. Later in the morning, Carla was talking about some Lush product she'd seen mentioned recently and it got us thinking about Lush again. There was another product she used to use all the time when they had a location here in Santa Monica, but that one's been gone for ages and it was sort of out of sight out of mind. But it turns out there's one at the mall in Culver City, so we decided to go check it out.

We got several things and then headed to the Target at the end of the mall and passed by a super cute hobby shop that had a bunch of knock-off lego type bricks with all sorts of licensed characters, and they also had a bunch of book nooks and other wood craft type stuff and we ended up buying quite a few things lol. Facebook/Instagram has been pushing book nooks on me for a while so it felt like fate. I got one book nook and Carla got three wood craft dinosaur sets and a Kung Fu Panda brick set (this brand is a lot less cheap looking than most non-lego brand bricks I've seen).

I have been trying to find some new plain t-shirts I can wear to work as I currently only have one that both fits well and feels nice (though I do have others that are tolerable). It's really hard for me to find shirts because I am sensitive about fabrics. I usually buy most of my clothes from Target because I don't like shopping and am lazy, but they don't have any good t-shirts right now, so while we were at the mall I checked out Uniqlo and Old Navy, and neither had good shirts (the Uniqlo ones I couldn't even bear to try on because the fabric felt so NOPE to me just from a quick touch), but at least I can mark those off my list of possibilities.

We then went to Target and got some random stuff (mostly food, but also a nice Encanto puzzle) and then while I was waiting for Carla to check out I got a pepperoni cheese pretzel from Auntie Anne's. Haven't eaten there in literal decades, but it was delicious. Also had tasty watermelon lemonade.

Overall it was a very nice trip. We used to go to the mall all the time years and years ago and never go, but this one is not at all dead and has lots of nice shops. Kind of seemed like back in the heyday of malls. We should do that more often!

4. Look at Tuxie's snoot! So cute!

Possibly my new fitness goal?

I am not consistent about when or how often I jog, but I don't tend to exert myself too much. Yesterday I added a couple of errands to the route, and extended the run to do a tiny bit along a stream on the Across Lexington A route. I ran with regular walk breaks for an hour, then walked the remaining mile or so home. I was tired yesterday, then sore overnight. This weekend and next is a Red Line annoyance. I realized I probably hadn't left enough time after bellringers' picnic lunch to get to Teale Square for the pumgmul group, so I jogged from the Greenway to the Charles Street replacement bus stop, less than a mile to speed up the journey a bit. I was wearing a large backpack and carrying my sword, wearing sneakers but not "running" clothes. It was fine. I got sweaty but felt well otherwise, and made it in time, which made me happy. I had the idea that instead of training for a 10k race, for example, what if I train for trying to connect with the T on a time schedule? How many items should I be carrying? How inappropriately should I be dressed? How much of the training should be sprinting up stairs? I don't like stairs, I'm not great at sprinting, but it's worth doing that when trying to catch a once-an-hour bus.

What is my goal with the janggu? I'm not taking lessons, but I go to the bi-weekly rehearsal with the group and sort of play along while they actually get ready for a performance. Should I ask what I'd need to do to perform? Would I like showing off in that way? I'm always hesitant about performing in a show with the tap class - why would this be better? It might even be more intimidating - their next gig is a short part of the Korean Independence day observance on City Hall Plaza in a month. I'm happy that Japan no longer occupies Korea, but I'm not very good and definitely not Korean, although nobody has minded me being there in the little group. I haven't been invited to perform anyway, so I don't really need to think about it, but I was encouraged this afternoon to briefly dance (ish) along while trying to play a sogo drum (more like walking around to music). I had never held one before. It was louder than I expected (why was I surprised? Small can be loud).
Soon enough someone else needed it, and I went back to the corner and my janggu.
Here is a moderately helpful video I found after a quick search, of someone playing one while doing the ribbon hat thing (I don't remember the name of that and will not bother to look it up right now). She seems to be in a gym with other people, so the background sounds have nothing to do with her activities

I can now report a lovely day!

[livejournal.com profile] ordenchaz and I drove to a family reunion south of Mille Lacs Lake (yes, 'thousand lakes lake'). This is the same location that's been used for the past 10 to 15 years, a farm with a large barn used for gatherings - kitchen upstairs, plenty of space upstairs and down.

The weather was darn near perfect: up 70s, with a nice breeze.

We were able to talk to some of our favorite folks, and also to talk some genealogy with a cousin whose interest in it has grown over the past few years.

We also talked to each other quite a bit LOL as we watched the bean bag toss tournament.

As we drove home we saw what looked like fog along with the road: smoke from Canadian wildfires. Air quality in Minneapolis is officially Unhealthy today. Not at the reunion!

- Worked on the purse I'm knitting for myself, which is about 75% done with the knitting
- Searched my stash of fabric scraps for a potential lining fabric (to unsatisfying results, I was sure I had some fabric left over from the red prototype skirt, but I couldn't find it)
- Consequently, refreshed my memory about dyeing fabric with tea
- Took photos of items we are getting rid of, to post online to give away or sell
- Put nice new silver ear-wires on a pair of cheap earrings that were irritating my ears
- Added a thingy to the necklace Sparkly gave me a while ago, to keep it from getting twisted around while I'm wearing it
- Made a pair of red and yellow earrings to match the Maya Kern poppies skirt that Sparkly got me a while ago, because I didn't have any jewelry to wear with it

I mostly stopped wearing jewelry a few years ago, from a combo of not-practical-for-work and not-practical-for-covid, but I used to have several things I wore every day and I'm trying to get back to that now that it's practical. I'm also realizing that I really like how dangly earrings look on me.

Oh and also! I started reading one of my books from the [community profile] thestoryinside July book suggestions last night.

today I went to my brother's place to a) see the new appliances b) to learn to use the new appliances and the new tv system because I'll be house/cat sitting.

My brother has a little pool. I spent hours hovering just at the waterline with my head (the rest of me submerged like a manatee) But with the water that hot, it wasn't that refreshing.

I had planned to go to the whiskey rebellion festival tomorrow but it was only friday/Sat. That's weird but oh well (it was too hot for festivals) I wanted to go to the Pittsburgh Pickle festival. (points to the too hot thing)

A Slash of Emerald
82%. Second in the Dr Julia Lewis mystery series. It's been a while since the first one and tbh I've been reading/listening to so many historical murder series that they start to blend together a bit so I don't entirely remember the first one (though I did give it four stars so I clearly liked it) but I feel like I'm enjoying this one even more than the first? It's definitely good.

The War on Alcohol: Prohibition and the Rise of the American State
4%. Title is self-explanatory. Just started but it seems like an interesting topic!

Kill Her Twice
6%. YA murder mystery set in 1930s LA Chinatown. So far so good, but I've only just gotten started.

Just Happy to Be Here
26%.

Sister Outsider
32%.

Recently Finished
Riding the Rails
This was good! Felt a little repetitive and the best parts were short chapters that focused on individuals rather than the longer chapters that were supposedly organized by topic but kind of wandered a bit.

Murder at the Patel Motel
I really liked this a lot. It looks like the other books the author has written are middle grade and I'm going to check them out, but I hope he does some more mysteries because this was a lot of fun.

Rapport: Friendship, Solidarity, Communion, Empathy
New Murderbot short story. It's available free here. This is set after the most recent book and is about ART and crew. I enjoyed it.

Astronautical!
Cute middle grade graphic novel set in a universe where a planet has broken apart into little bits and one can travel between the chunks in boats. Things like gravity and oxygen are hand-waved and it's very vibes-based and ultimately a little too silly for me, but it was cute.

Koyubi-sensei no Reiteki Sakusen
New manga by Uguisu Sachiko. This is a single volume collection of what were originally one-shots, so although they have the same characters, there's not really any plot arc. I've read (and scanlated) a couple of the stories but the rest were new to me. I like all her stuff and this was no exception.

Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri vol. 17
This really feels like it's wrapping up. There was an announcement for the next volume in the back and it was listed as volume 18 rather than final volume, but I would be surprised if it went more than another volume or two after that. tbh I'm fine with that. I've enjoyed the series but I liked it more before it developed an over-arching plot. (My same complaint with Katekyo Hitman Reborn, which also started as a gag manga and evolved into something with silly elements but overall more serious.)

Mission! vol. 4
