Anyone else suspect that the Doctor's canonical ability to speak Baby will be an important plot point in Saturday's episode?

Daniel Feeld (Potter’s Feeld oh ffs I just got it)

Dan’s literary agent Ben (*looks up the actor playing him*—he’s like Jim Broadbent but shorter—huh, Roy Hudd, he seems interesting—oh wait, I read about him a few weeks ago after seeing a photo of his gravestone!) is definitely the MVP of this story. He gets the only nude scene so far.

I don't think I could have watched this show when I was younger-- too many scene would've had my stomach hurting in sympathy. Now I'm just  "Must a series have a plot? Is it not enough to see a sixty-year-old man with a gorgeous speaking voice endure humiliating medical exams?"

I think I can see how Dan ended up a professional writer—he can’t talk about anything head-on and has to build a sort of sanitary cordon of words around it. Mind you, I expect he’s from a generation that had trouble saying ‘cancer’ out loud. And I like his doctor—he’s incredibly deadpan, with a dark sense of humour, and ultimately I think he really is trying to meet Dan where he’s at. With a vibe I’m not sure how to describe other than “amused, subtly flirty psychopomp.” Even if people-misunderstanding-each-other is the leading cause of drama, I find it very satisfying to watch characters understand each other.

Feel like the soundtrack is doing some weird things—I can’t name any specific examples, but several times I’ve noticed it sort of playing against the script and the acting. Which fits with the fight Dan and whatsis-the-obnoxious-director-played-by-Richard-E-Grant are having over whether to open with Pig singing ‘Teenager In Love’ or with him singing ‘Your Cheating Heart’ (I’m Team Dan on this one—'Your Cheating Heart’ is too slow and not incongruous enough). I continue to feel less bad that Richard E. Grant’s character is going to get beaten up in what I now know is Episode Four.

Ooh, Pig  is prone to spoonerisms too? Or is it just that one phrase (“Umero Nunno”)? Anyway, spooky mirroring of Ben there. Hywel Bennet is terrifying. I don't know who plays a scarier East End gangster: him in this, or Christopher Fairbank in The Show (2020).

I supposed I should be creeped out by Dan fondling Sandra’s makeup brush, but it sort of reminds me of the bit in La Grande Illusion where the POWs are fascinated by a trove of women’s clothes. Anyway by this point we’ve seen him to be fairly harmless. Real Sandra is smarter and tougher than Fictional Sandra, and I think Dan’s going to come to appreciate that.

Had to break off midway through Episode Three last night, will try to watch some more on my lunch break today.

I'm kinda excited that The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System is getting deluxe hardcovers!

When I was looking at where it can be preordered, I discovered that Hudson Booksellers has functional listing for the deluxe boxset and a 20% off coupon (plus free USPS shipping over $55).

There's so many bad things going on requiring our attention that the cuts/firing in the meteorology and climate science communities gets less attention, but having a fully staffed NOAA is an important issue. Right now, there is a 100-hour livestream going on to call attention to how vital these services are, especially as hurricane season is upon us.  I have it on in the background right now.

What can we do? Watch the livestream, call our Representatives, and go to 5 Calls for sample script/letters.

The Incandescent, Emily Tesh. For years I have been complaining about the lack of SFF written from the point of view of a teacher, and Emily Tesh probably wasn't listening but she wrote this book anyway! Tesh taught classics at a boarding school for two years, and the worldbuilding of her boarding school in a world very much like ours only with magic is very much informed by that experience -- this is the sort of book that has a lot to say about education in our world, while also having creative and thought-provoking worldbuilding. It's not quite the type of story about a teacher that I wanted, but I hope it will lead to more of these.

(Also, I do still need to read Gooseberry Bluff Community College of Magic, which is the only other example I know of a fantasy novel from the point of view of a teacher.)

Orange Cake and Daily Tasks

Very quickly, because I'm busy rewatching a Korean music group challenge show (because of course I am), I wanted to announce to a waiting world that the second time I baked this particular orange cake, it was just as good as the first time. I am satisfied.

Today was supposed to be the first day that I gathered up all the paperwork we need to prepare Bob's Canadian permanent residence application. I ended up dealing with other things, but I hope it wasn't just a case of me trying to avoid a tough job. It's undoubtedly not nearly as tough as my fears make it seem. I'm going to do my best tomorrow to get the job done. Then Bob and I will figure out the following day's tasks wrt the application. We figured that we'd try to tackle one job each every day, and we're going to try to stick to that.

Well, except for me, obviously. Sigh.

Wish us both luck tomorrow.

Amazon has suddenly decided to not to download any books I've purchased at any point of time unless I update my Kindle for Android app :(

I suppose I could update from version 8.33.0.100(1.3.226969.) and 8.122.1.0(2.4.41706.0), but I'm worried about losing the ability to sideload books via Calibre. Has anyone run into issues with that post update?

I'd already shifted to buying more stuff via Kobo, but this is so irritating.

ETA: I updated the app on an old phone and found that the collections and sideloading still worked, so I ended updating the app after all.

Oops?

"I'm exhausted from not getting enough sleep, and my spoons are gone after the hell that was work today," I said yesterday evening after getting home from work.

"I have so many things that I need to get done this evening, but I don't have the energy right now," I said. "Plus my head's really starting to hurt."

"You know what?" I asked myself. "A short nap will be the perfect solution."

Spoiler: it was not the perfect solution for accomplishing things yesterday evening. Why not? Because instead of it being a short nap, it turned into a full night's sleep.

Oops?

Seriously, I didn't even turn out the lights. I curled up on top of the comforter on the bed. I wasn't even under the sheets. And I still slept for hours.

Luckily, I woke up for something like twenty minutes a little before midnight. That gave me time to take care of a couple of things that I really had to do, and then I was able to at least turn out the lights and such. But, yeah. That wasn't exactly what my plan was for yesterday. It's certainly what happened, though.

The state of me in general:

Meh. Nothing in particular to report, just, you know, everything.

Reading:

Sarah Waters, Tipping the Velvet. I'm a bit more than halfway through with this, but stalled at the point where the main character is about to make another very bad, self-destructive choice. There are other novels by Waters I like more.

T. Kingfisher, A Sorceress Comes to Call. Kingfisher's novels are always worth a read. I found this one quite harrowing on an emotional level--something about the particular brand of abuse the main character goes through really gets to me. But Kingfisher never just drops her characters into hell and leaves them there, which is an assurance I need these days. Bonus points for how she plays with the "lonely girl bonds with a magical horse" trope.

And I'm re-reading the Murderbot books (after having finally finished the series) to see if I get more out of them this time.

Watching:

The Murderbot TV show, which (at the risk of heresy) I'll admit I like more than the books. I've never found it easy to connect emotionally with Martha Wells' writing, so I think the story benefits greatly from being performed. Alexander Skarsgard is very, very good as Murderbot, managing to convey huge amounts of layered characterization using mostly his eyes, his voice, and some body language. And David Dastmalchian, whom I'd never heard of before, almost steals the show as Murderbot's semi-nemesis Gurathin. The two of them play off each other very well, as two similar personalities who, naturally, can't stand each other and are incredibly awkward about it.

Leverage: Redemption, which I like fine but which can't quite hold up to the original show. The (mostly) lack of Hardison changes the emotional dynamic I loved in the original, although at least, mercifully, the show quickly stopped trying to make parenthood its new dynamic. I do like Breanna, and I like that there's now a canonically queer person in the main team, but it's just not the same.

I'm still watching, though. I'm only up to the first episode of S3, so no spoilers past that, please.

Taskmaster S19 is a delight. I love this series' cast and they are very, very funny together. I was nervous about Jason Mantzoukas, because I only knew him as Derek from The Good Place and that character irritated me, but he brings beautiful chaos to Taskmaster.

Which, I'm told, has prompted all the usual gross comments about the girl playing Hermione. Ugh. Why are people so disgusting?

(Also, fuck JKR, but she's not the one being awful inside this complaint. Not to fear, I'm sure she'll find a way to outclass them soon enough.)

My favourite Doctor Who companions

May. 28th, 2025 09:25 pm
vivdunstan: Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor with his best friend Sarah Jane Smith (sarah jane smith)
[personal profile] vivdunstan
Was just pondering this. If I focus on a decade at a time, pulling out my absolute favourites, it would go:

1960s - Jamie (to be fair I haven't seen/heard all of this era of Who)
1970s - Sarah Jane and Romana I
1980s - Peri and Ace
1990s - nope, going to pass!
2000s - Rose and Donna
2010s - Amy and Clara
2020s - Ruby

And if I narrow those down to a top 3 favourite list:

1st - Sarah Jane
2nd - Romana I
3rd - Clara

Interesting that my favourite pre-dates my time watching as a Who fan. I only started watching as a youngster with Season 16 in 1978. I'd then see Sarah Jane Smith in K9 and Company, and "The Five Doctors". Then watched loads of her old stories before she returned to Doctor Who and got her own spinoff series.

Romana I was my first ever Who companion as a viewer. Great starting point!

And although Clara has her flaws, and annoys a lot of people, I really like her. There's a very "classic" feel to her, both as written and acted. So she definitely earns her place on my list.

Last time I said "There's some good stuff in here, but a lot of it has been in previous bundles - if you've bought many of them it may be a good idea to cost out whether it will be cheaper to buy the remaining things that you want piecemeal, rather than getting the whole bundle." That still applies, but if you bought this bundle in 2023 there's no need to look, you've already got all of it.

Sciona, the first woman ever admitted to the University of Magic, takes on Thomil, a janitor from a discriminated-against culture, as her lab assistant, and they both learn dark secrets about their world.

Thomil is introduced when his clan makes a desperate run across deadly ground to get to the safety of a city surrounded by a magical shield. The shield protects against bitter cold and the deadly Blight, which randomly zaps and dissolves people, but the area around the city is particularly Blight-infested. Only Thomil and his baby niece survive. When they arrive, they find that the city natives hate their race and has consigned them all as a permanent underclass.

Ten years later, Sciona, a well-to-do young woman in the city, is preparing for her magic exam to try to get into the sexist magic university, which no woman has ever passed. Though she does pass, all the male mages but her mentor hate her and hassle her. The only other person who's even remotely nice to her is Thomil, the janitor, who is assigned as her lab assistant as a cruel joke. But though Sciona is racist and classist, and Thomil is mildly sexist in an oblivious way, they find that they kind of get along...

Wang has an engaging, easy-read style for the most part, the intros to the two main characters are quite compelling, and despite the heavy-handed axes of privilege themes, Thomil and Sciona have a nice dynamic.

I said "for the most part." The exception is the magic system, which I think is basically computer programming via magic typewriters (spellographs). The wizards program a spell to access a specific area of the magical Otherrealm (which they can't see or sense in any way, so they're just plotting points on a grid) to grab magical energy or matter from it. But we get MUCH more detailed and lengthy descriptions of it, from long explanations to actual spells:

CONDITION 1: DEVICE is 15 Vendric feet higher than its position at the time of activation.

ACTION 1: FIRE will siphon from POWER an amount of energy no lower than 4.35 and no higher than 4.55 on the Leonic scale.

ACTION 2: FIRE will siphon within the distance of DEVICE no higher than 3 Vendric inches.

If and only if CONDITION 1 is met, ACTION 1 and ACTION 2 will go into effect.

The first half is Sciona and Thomil working on various spells, interspersed with very heavy-handed commentary on colonialism, sexism, and how Sciona totally gets feminism when it applies to her personally but is oblivious to all other isms. Sciona is an awful, self-centered person and Thomil is mostly perfect. Almost exactly halfway through, there is a shocking reveal. At least, it shocked many readers. It did not shock me.

Despite what the plot description sounds like, Sciona and Thomil do not have a romance beyond occasional sexy feelings. It's a magical dystopia/dark academia, I think similar to Babel (which I could not get very far into) but less anvillicious in that it does not have literal footnotes saying stuff like "This is a racist comment and racism is bad." (In the bookshop, I have Blood Over Bright Haven tagged "If you like Babel you will like this.") Sadly for M. L. Wang, this comparative subtlety got them some reviews on Goodreads accusing them of condoning Sciona being a bad person and endorsing her beliefs.

I did not care for this book but I can see how it would work for many readers, especially if they're shocked by the twist at the halfway mark.

Reclaimed by Seth Haddon was amazing, as usual! The scholar Saba Vasili, a refugee from Kerinsk who now lives in Zvensia, is accused of inventing a machine that opened the astral sea and killed hundreds of people. He must prove his innocence with the help of Ambassador Luan Zek of the Rezwyn Empire.

This is the third book in the World of Reforged series, but they can be read more or less independently. Here, we get to learn even more about this original magic system.

Saba Vasili is a trans man with anxiety. I thought his dysmorphia was very well-written, without being too depressing. Luan Zek has an old leg injury and uses a cane. There's major m/m, as well as some f/f.

It's turkey o'clock.
