The question first: I need the word "education" in as many languages as possible for a new website. How do I go about finding out? Also, feel free to volunteer translations you happen to know.

Secondly, it's short fic time again as the challenges in [livejournal.com profile] celestial_templ and [livejournal.com profile] thefiringline went into gear. Since I love my space stations (almost) equally, I wrote the DS9 ficlet(s)

"Faith Manages"

and the Babylon 5 ficlet

"Rumpelstilzchen".

Come on, someone had to compare Morden to said fairy tale figure, and it was a good title. The B5 one is all Narn, all the time (well, except for a certain insinuation this Centauriphile had to make), and the DS9 one about Rob's favourite cleric in all the universe, Kai Winn.

In other news, I finally have an X-Men icon, beautifully made for me by [livejournal.com profile] penknife! And things are going fine on the RL front, I'm happy to say.

Hehehe... you wrote a *DS9* fic called "Faith Manages"? :)

And I'm reliably informed that it's "Onderwijs", in het Nederlands :)

As you might guess, the title is ironic.*g* For further explanations, check it out.

And thank you - noted!

Here are some words for "education":

I found them via this site: your dictionary.com (http://www.yourdictionary.com/languages.html). This takes you to a table of languages. Click on a language link and you'll see whatever they have on the language group. It isn't a translating tool. Once you get to the language group list, then your work starts.

Some links are broken, some take you to word lists that you have to scroll through, some are just weird and of no help at all. Others won't be of much help unless you have the special fonts downloaded. But still - when you get a hit, you score!

LJ has a really cool (and friendly) community for all kinds of language discussions and questions: [livejournal.com profile] linguaphiles

I'd just ask your question there, I'm sure you'll get more (and faster) answers than any regular internet search would produce.

*off to read the Morden fic* *g*

You know, I had really hard time thinking a good Finnish translation for 'education' (makes me wonder just what the hell I've been doing the last five years I've supposedly studied English at the university :))

Anyway, since I can't think of a word that would correnspond 'education' completely, I'm giving a few different ones. I hope one of them is what you're looking for.

'koulutus' = formal education, what you end up with as a result of studying
'opettelu' = the process of learning
'opiskelu' = the process of studying in an institution
'opetus' = a lesson learned

Intriguing that there are so many different shades. I've been fascinated by words that can't really be translated - for exampe, you can't render "haunt" adequatly in German, and you can't render "Weltschmerz" or "gemütlich" adequatly in English.

I think I'll go with "koulutus", since it's supposed to refer to the education you get at a school.

Not much point in telling you it in German, which is the only language other than English or Maori I knew it in off the top of my head. :-) It's 'matauranga' in Maori.

For other languages, you could try Altavista's Babel fish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr) service. I can't speak for its accuracy for some of the languages but you get them in their own scripts which would look cool.
