Fine, universe. I give in. No longer am I Team Spot; I've switched to Team Porthos. Sorry, Data, I still love your poem to your cat, but the beagle won me over re: most favourite ST pet. (Livingstone the fish was never in the running.) And I'm not even a dog person, I usually always prefer cats. But did Spot get a whole episode centred on its well being? Spot did not. 'Twas the big eyes that did me in. And now I have to retrospectively angst about Scotty, the bastard, and what he did to Porthos in the Rebootverse! (I mean, given dog life spans, chances are this was a Porthos descendant rather than Porthos Prime, but you know, a transporter accident, and Porthos (Prime?) never seen again, this makes me worried. Because precedent.

...incidentally, I wonder whether we'll ever see Merkin the Tribble again on Discovery?

I don't know, it's pretty hard to contend with Dr. Zimmerman's talking iguana.

Ah, but the iguana was a one episode guest star. Spot and Porthos were recurring characters, or even regulars. :)

Star Trek Online has a brief bit in a mission that implies that mirror Porthos ended up in the regular universe and was adopted by Barclay. Because of course he would.

Thus, to maintain symmetry, I must assume that Scotty beamed regular Porthos to the mirror universe, and he's been happily adopted by evil mirror Barclay.

(Evil mirror Barclay is, presumably, essentially the same, being too nervous to actually do anything nasty.)

Not to mention that Mirror Barclay lives at a time when the Terran Empire has been overthrown by the Evil Alliance of Evil featured in the DS9 Mirrorverse episodes, and thus is probably in the resistance to said Alliance anyway. :) Mind you, given Scotty has been able to store himself for 80 years in a transporter buffer, I can buy him doing this to Porthos, but after witnessing how Archer gets if his beagle's welfare is threatened, I'm surpurised nothing worse than being stuck on a remote station happened to Scotty before Kirk found him...
