Call the Midwife 7.07
Mar. 7th, 2018 04:55 pmAbout to expire from exhaustion. Haven't had the chance to watch any new movies for months. Weeks of literary festivals are fun to experience but draining to organize, is what I'm saying.
So, in brevity.
To start on a lite note, Timothy, I wanted you to be a Beatles fan, but I'll take the Rolling Stones as well, you London kid, you. Given you're a a musician yourself, I predict you'll found a band yourself with your mates and provide Dr. Turner with another parental learning curve. Just take it easy on the drugs once you reach 1965 or so...
Now, about the dark rest: this was unabashedly Death Of Little Nell (hence Dickensian), if not Death of Little Eva: beloved-by-all character dies after one last time demonstrating her utter goodness. Frankly, I'm a bit awed at how unjadedly holding-no-barriers Victorian sentiment it was to judge it properly. (Or to ponder how I feel about the show killing off a regular.) I mean, not even one 20th century railing against death, no, Barbara was kind and comforting her loved ones and brave facing her death like... well, like she was living in a Victorian novel. It was poor Phyllis who truly made me feel it, though, that delayed sobbing all on her own because she just can't do it in font of everyone.
Show, when I muttered every now and then I wanted Shelagh to return to practice midwivery, I didn't mean you had to kill off one of the other midwives to make her do it, that's a bit radical, is all I'm saying.
(Though I am glad Shelagh is back to practicing midwivery, for however long it takes.)
Lucille Anderson's subplot indicates they're continuing to explore what it means to be a (black) immigrant in England via her, which is a good idea not least because of our present, but also because it's a storyline none of the earlier regulars could have had. Lucille struggling to find the balance - how for to go for integration, which community to join - probably isn't finished yet.
We've had teenage mothers before, but poor Michael is the first teenage father (I think) who is the case of the week, and I wonder whether he (and Allison) will be back the way Reggie keeps coming back, given Patrick's fast attachment in this episode. (Irreverent thought: maybe Michael will be released early and will turn out to have musical gifts so he'll be in the band Rolling Stones fan Timothy is bound to found/join? It would be a classic 60s tale - the way out for a working class lad seemingly destined for hopelessness.)
Lastly: Show, whatever you do, please, please, please, don't start a love triangle once Trixie returns. I really liked that you had her and Tom become friends and good exes last season. And I wish I wouldn't be distrustful like this, but I know the way of (much) tv.

Date: 2018-03-08 12:12 am (UTC)What did Jacob used to say on TWoP about BSG back in the day? "Everything you want, but in the worst way." It was good to see Shelagh back in uniform, though.
I think the thing that got me about Barbara was when she was crying alone about possibly losing her fingers. Sigh. She's a nurse. She's septic and her actually recognizing her own symptoms was heartbreaking to me. She couldn't really rail against fate or cry in front of anyone, either. But the nurse part got me. She knew exactly what was going to happen.
On a side note, they said they decided to do this ep when the actress decided to leave because some of the children without limbs in the thalidomide eps had lost their limbs in real life due to sepsis.
This show gets sadder each week. I don't care if Trixie is with Tom or the dentist as long as she's happy. I need some happiness on this show. Next week is another funeral and well, it's just sad. :-(
