Happy Easter and Pessach to all who celebrate, and to everyone: I bring beautifully decorated wells, as I do every year. Since the Easter weekend in my hometown was predicted to be a rainy one, I used the sun on Good Friday to do my annual trip through Franconian Switzerland to admire the Easter Wells. This year, they had a distinct fairy tale theme, as you'll see below the cut, but for starters and above cut, enjoy some variations of Puss-in-Boots. The Marquis de Carabas salutes everyone.

On to the wells, in order. This one in Litzendorf just harmonizes so beautifully with its background, which is a church build by Balthasar Neumann, Franconia's premier baroque architect.

Fun every year: the wells at Tiefenpölz, where they do not only decorate with eggs but actually serve eggs.

And tell the Passion with eggs:

The one near Greifenstein is the first one who favoured fairy tales. First, an overview:

And here are some eggs, featuring, among others, Little Red Riding Hood, the Evil Queen, Frau Holle, and the heroine of "Brother and Sister":

...Seven Swans, the town musicians of Bremen, the Goldass...

And, naturally:

On to Heiligenstadt:

Details:

This one was new to me, noticed in passing, and very impressed was I by the Easter Egg Wall:

Now, on to the first of the All Fairy Tales, All The Time well. It's at Behringersmühle, and while that one is always pretty, this year they were really pulling all the stops, especially with the details:

That's where the first of the Puss-in-Boots is from. Observe some of the other heroes and heroines featured:

The Wishing Table, the Gold Ass and the Cudgel-in-the-Sack is a hit fairy tale in Germany, I tell you.

Since the well features both the prince from Sleeping Beauty, and the one from Rapunzel, I can't help but hear them singing a duet to a Sondheim tune.

Aaaagony....

The town musicians of Bremen are featured as well:

As is the Frog King:

The wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, complete with half eaten grandma:

Onwards. This is Pottenstein:

Obertrubach:

Where there was a lovely baby goat nearby:

All Fairy Tales, All The Time well the second, in Kleingesee next to the firefighter's house.

Now observe the details.

Those are the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm the bunny is reading, naturally. Also, next to Rapunzel is a sign saying "Climbing Forbidden".

Sleeping Beauty (called "Dornröschen" in German, which is why the rose theme dominates):

The Town Musicians of Bremen.

The story of Frau Holle, with one side each themed for Goldmarie and Pechmarie, the golden and the pitch sister:

Frau Holle herself:

Goldmarie and Pechmarie, the good sister for whom it rained gold and the bad one for whom it rained pitch:

Hänsel and Gretel:

Snow's there as well, of course:

Rumpelstilchen was here:

And we, dear reader, must leave. On to Gößweinstein:

Ebermannsstadt:

And lastly, the Emperor of Easter Wells, as ever, in Bieberbach:

Once more, enjoy the holidays, everyone!
