I'll be offline from this evening till January 1st at the earliest or January 3rd at the latest, so this is my Happy New Year post. I'm really glad to have met everyone I've met in 2004 (even though some of you are really good at making me brush up my Beckett) , and to have kept all my older friendships.

So, fannish discoveries of 2004:

- Alias: is not a replacement of the Jossverse shows, but is fun, and has some interesting characters; won't break my heart, but keeps me entertained

- Battlestar Galactica (2003): based strictly on what I've seen so far, could be the next show I fall in love and get obsessed with; if it gets cancelled, expect Firefly-style cries of frustration

- Spooks: loved the first season, am examining my Christmas-emptied budget and contemplating aquiring the second, for it is truly a mighty fine thing, the best from the UK since Ultraviolet

- [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse: multi-fandom roleplaying insanity which takes up too much time but is ever so rewarding.

And since everyone is bound to post New Year's resolutions, I'll be contrary and make resolutions about what I won't do in 2005 (fanlife-wise):

1.) I won't apply to play Arvin Sloane at [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse. For starters, I don't have the time. Secondly, the fourth season starts next week and I won't be able to watch it, since I'm in Germany. Thirdly, get thee gone, evil middle-aged genius with thy compellingly twisted emotional life, I can resist thine attraction.

2.) I won't apply to play Winn Adami there, either. See above for reason No.1. Fun as it might be to interact with the other DS9 muses and have a post-Fire Caves Winn mess mightily with everyone's perception of the prophets, I have other things to do. Vade retro, your Eminence.

3.) I won't write a Centauri version of Les Liasons Dangereuses, starring Vir as Madame de Tourvel and Mariel as Valmont, no matter how well that actually fits with the bookverse. Reason No.1, as always, and secondly, who is supposed to be the gender-bend Marquise de Merteuil then? Not Londo, that's for sure.

4.) I shall also resist any temptation coming my way to write a gigantic Sarah Sisko coming back from the dead to get the Prophets opus. No time. Also, avoid the lure of venting pet annoyances via characters that aren't defined by the show due to minimal screen time, for this way lies Mary Sue.

5.) I shall not write either the Very Wrong Alias pairing or the Just As Wrong Alias Threesome I have some Horribly Wrong ideas for. They just wouldn't. Unless on drugs. I tell you, they wouldn't. And anyway, I'm not really good with sex.

***

Now that's settled: while waiting for more Battlestar Galactica episodes from [livejournal.com profile] hmpf, I had a cautious look at what fanfic already exists. So far, the best thing I found is from Jossverse and Farscape veteran [livejournal.com profile] butterflykiki, and called "Rational(e)". Set immediately post-miniseries and deals with Gaius Baltar and Six. Speaking of...

6.) I shall not pester any of my lj friends to play Baltar (new Galactica version) or Six on [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse just so Baltar and John Crichton can discuss what it's like to live with a chip in the head and an invisible, err, friend to talk to. Even though they have other stuff in common as well (scientists, high body count, loss of world). Also, my desire for a Six/Harvey conversation shall remain equally unfulfilled.

Happy New Year!

You'd have to work hard to get John Crichton to talk about his invisible friend, anyway. The gang is in B5-verse now, btw.

Which is great (after New Year, when I'm back online) because Londo had the idea that Crichton's wormhole-navigating abilities could come in handy for a rescue-Sisko-from-the-prophets expedition. (As a favour to Kasidy.)*g*

Also: but wouldn't it be good if John could share with someone who has the same problem? *veg*

Glad you enjoyed it *eg*. Just to tempt you further there's an episode with Alexander Siddig in Series Two...

I won't write a Centauri version of Les Liasons Dangereuses, starring Vir as Madame de Tourvel and Mariel as Valmont, no matter how well that actually fits with the bookverse.

Oh go on. You know you want to.

Have a very happy New Year.

happy new year. . .

I notice you didn't swear not to write any more fic about Buffy Summers. *makes puppy eyes* considering that the show is named after her, I've found precious little good Buffy-fic, and yours I love!

Buffy fic shall get written, as I am as frustrated at that particular lack as you are.*g*

G'Kar, of course. Hell, JMS almost wrote that one (complete with tentacle!pr0n) but then chickened out. Gender-bend G'Kar: the way it was meant to be...

Popular opinion seems to be that you will, in fact, be writing that Centauri fic.

Bwahah at #4 (Sarah Sisko). I seriously would read that, even though all your reasons for not doing it are valid. Perhaps we can bug someone else to write it?

Happy New Year, and I'm glad to have met you as well! *glomps Londo, too*

You know, I *am* meaning to have Ben come back in the new year...I think someone wants to mun for him, too.

DOWN, plotbunnies! I don't actually know who John Crichton is, not that that would matter really...

John Crichton is a guy who met a couple of wormhole aliens who gave him a dubious gift. *g* Otherwise, he hasn't so much in common with Ben. The human guy in this icon. Main character of Farscape, geek, goes from innocent to lethal, messed-up and occasionally crazy due to what happens to him. But he can navigate and manipulate wormholes. (That would be the dubious gift.)

Ahhhh. [livejournal.com profile] banik mentioned him in the context of wormholes, in a conversation with Kasidy. Does this mean Stark is from Farscape as well? (Originally--he says he's RPing in some other universe now.)

Date: 2005-01-07 07:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
Yes, Stark is from Farscape, now stuck in the B7 universe. (That's Blake's 7, a great and dark British sci-fi show from the late 70s and early 80s.)

Thank you. We sure had fun.*g* Mind you, they'll probably try to keep this particular meeting secret, which means Na'Toth will inevitably stumble across said secret...

Bwah. Poor Na'Toth. It's odd, being able to see and support G'Kar/Mollari and also wanting to hug Na'Toth who's in love with G'Kar...

Ahh. That makes things slightly clearer--even though both Farscape and B7 are universes that I have yet to get into. Good grief, there are stacks of SF shows out there! (So far I'm a Trekkie for four of the five live-action series, and am trying to get into Stargate and B5 and possibly Enterprise. But this leaves at least half a dozen other universes yet to be discovered...)

If it makes you feel better: even if Londo didn't exist I don't think (and the G'Kar Mun agrees with me there) that G'Kar would ever get together with Na'Toth. It's like Kasidy and Jake. No, there isn't a blood connection, but the show makes it pretty clear he regards her as a daughter. Just - ew. No.

nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Default)
From: [personal profile] nenya_kanadka
*nods* Yeah, that does make me feel better. :) Although it still leaves Na'Toth unhappy--but I think a lot of people have felt that way about someone who was inaccessible for similar reasons.

(Pet peeve in this category for me is Janeway/Seven...)

Date: 2005-01-09 01:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
Crushing on your mentor is certainly not a rare thing. (Just ask Lennier, who actually does this on the show.) In the best of circumstances, the mentor in question is a kind, responsible person who deals with it gently and after a time, the protegé is able to accept the paternal affection only.

With Janeway/Seven, I can see the chemistry but aside from the fact Janeway is Seven's mentor and parental figure, the same problem applies that does for every single romantic relationship between Janeway and any other member of her crew: it would be both against regulations and against her personal code of ethics. (Those regulations are there for a reason - a commanding officer just has too much opportunity to abuse his/her position if sexual relationships with a subordinate are permitted.) So, no.

Date: 2005-01-09 02:17 pm (UTC)
nenya_kanadka: thin elegant black cartoon cat (Default)
From: [personal profile] nenya_kanadka
Exactly. I can see people writing J/7 for the chemistry (as people do for other 'ships) but five second's thought about it makes me back off yelling "ew!"

The only person on Voyager I can see who Janeway might be able to sleep with (under this heading) is Chakotay--and that because he has been a captain on his own before. But even there... *shakes head* I can see them sleeping together in "Resolutions", because they're not in the ship's heirarchy any more, though.

Gah. Janeway's love life. :) She either gets no sex (except holographic or random-alien-of-the-week, and not much of that) as on the show, or gets paired with every darned crewman aboard, as in fanfic.

(Can you tell I've been reading VOY fic today?)
