2. Best Bargain
That would be the Kindle edition of Diary of a musical journay through Europe by Charles Burney. (German translation.) Something I needed for research, and which cost 33 Euros in printed form, at least the complete edition. Whereas the Kindle version cost only ca. 5 Euro. Now, with living authors, I'm all for supporting them, but Mr. Burney has been dead these past 200 something years, andd thus I pounced.
As for the book itself: the author, father of Fanny the novelist, wrote in the original two volumes, "The Present State of Music in France and Italy" (1771) and "The Present State of Music in Germany, the Netherlands and United Provinces" (1773). There are descriptions of basically every opera house and concert event you can imagine in these countries, and if you want to know what visiting opera (complete with description of the opera houses), listening to castrato and soprano alike in the Rokoko, pre-revolutionary world was like, Burney is your man. He also describes travel conditions and grumbles about inns (female German innkeepers are his particular foes). In short, this 18th-century European travel guide for music lovers is invaluable as a primary source.
