Things I learned from yesterday’s meme:
- shows produced by Joss Whedon still have the fastest quote recognition, even if it is just a one-word-quote
- Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor lose against Mark Hamill – this is just wrong
- I, Claudius should be better known

Okay, this quiz meme thing is fun, so I'll do another one. This one was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] estepheia. Guess the film from the description (factually accurate, I might add, just... from a certain point of view). All films impressed the hell out of me. None of them was listed yesterday.

Movies on my mind

1. Western writer hits town in search of dead friend.

2. Serial killer becomes seriously unpopular with the local gangsters.

3. Male bonding over construction work in war time.

4. Discourteous behaviour by train personel causes lawyer to consider a career change.

6. Loving couple's idyll gets disturbed by intrusive sister-in-law.

7. Terrorist falls for dead hostage's lover.

8. New head of state, gone religious after dissolute youth, invades foreign country under flimsy pretext. (NOT a contempary tale; two film versions available)

9. Maggie Thatcher inspires gay couple to become entrepeneurs.

10. Boy gets kidnapped by posh elder relatives and as an adult finds liberty in a prison camp.

11. New passenger finds effective way to end the eternal bickering of the crew.

12. Monotonous life of middle-aged psychiatrist gets new inspiration when young law official starts to visit.

***

And now I'm off to check what the US thought of Battlestar Galactica's fourth episode. Great Maker, I'm so happy this show gets such a good reception overseas. [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite wants to do Multiverse 2005, after last years' success with Multiverse 2004, and she has included the new BSG among the shows, which adds to my fannish glee.

Is eleven Alien, by any chance? I've never seen the film, but I know the premise well enough ...

From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
Yes, it's Alien. One of the unusual features of this film is that the crew of the Nostromo are realistic co-workers who don't like each other that much due to having lived with each other for too long. Hence bickering, but not, as in the Cameron-directed sequel, in snappy one-liners which scream "movie!". The difference between a British and an American film, I guess...

#3 is 'Bridge over the River Kwai' and #12 'Silence of the Lambs'????

From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
See, I knew you could do it.*g* Both are correct.

damn, somehow I missed yesterday's!

8. must be Henry V.

a lot of the others sound enticingly familiar, but I'm too tired to get the answers!

Trust you to pick the Shakespeare.*g* Correct, of course.

this is a very weird thing. I am *Terrible* about ID'ing movie & TV quotes out of context, and even worse with song lyrics. But poetry and particularly Shakespeare, I am all over. not that this was a quote, but you know what I mean.

4 & 10 are making me crazy b/c they're the ones I felt right away I should know.

10 couldn't be "Cool Hand Luke", could it? don't remember his backstory other than his mama coming to visit. 4 seems like maybe a farce of some kind. I'd say "Some Like it Hot" but I don't remember a lawyer.

No, not "Cool Hand Luke". Also, how didya like the big Starbuck episode?*g*

i've got the episode taped but since you said it went with next week's, I'm trying to wait a few days to watch it so I don't have to wait a whole week for the new one. I'll see how long I hold out.

Did you see I've got Wesley talking Victorian novels (http://www.livejournal.com/users/karabair/174191.html).

somehow I want #4 to be sci-fi, but I can't quite make it out.

From: [identity profile] selenak.livejournal.com
Ah, I see.*g* Meanwhile, look at another miniseries reaction (http://www.livejournal.com/users/buffyannotater/168330.html) here!

Since 4 has been identified by now, I can tell you. Gandhi. Not sci-fi. Now checking Wes and Victorian novels...

No, not Empire of the Sun. (Which would have been "boy gets first enthrallend and then disillusioned by American pragmatism", btw.) Same period, though, for the adult part.
