Request and links
Jul. 1st, 2003 09:13 amFirstly, after having seen about 13 episodes of "West Wing" now, I feel ready to branch out. Does anyone have any fanfic recommendations? Also, I wonder which of the usual fandom patterns apply. Can't be the hero bashing one, since this is an ensemble show and doesn't have a central character as such. How about 'shipping wars? Slasher battles? Controversial storylines? Do tell.
Secondly, link time. Here is a fantastic and long Connor post-Home story. Starring, in leading roles, the Disturbed Attractive One himself, Lilah and the late Daniel Holtz. How? Go and find out.
For people who have already read Order of the Phoenix or don't mind being spoiled: A.J. Hall presents the legal consequences of a certain Unfortunate Event and had me giggle long after I stopped reading this.
For people who, like me, feel sad about the late Katharine Hepburn and are fond of the movieverse X-Men,
c_elisa came up with a lovely homage.
Meanwhile, a slate of new HP quizzes, inspired by the most recent book, have appeared, so of course I had to :

Luna, Luna, Luna... no more needed.
Which Chick from Order of the Phoenix Are You? (Spoilers)
brought to you by Quizilla
Suits me fine. I like Luna, muchly, and people certainly find me weird at times. However, next came one of these quizzes you take because there's no way they can get it right. For example, I don't see any slashiness in Star Wars, so a couple of months ago I investigated which SW couple I am and came up with Han/Luke. Given the above and also that I'm in the extreme minority who finds the prequels actually more interesting than the OT, I was, shall we say, suprised. This time around, I tried this with HP and was told:

You are... Harry/Severus!
Ah, the delicious union of Potter/Snape. Puts a
smile on my face and a skip in my step. I bet
you lost it while reading Order of the Phoenix,
and strongly believe that post-Ootp slash is a
definite possibility. The bickering, glaring,
insults, and hostility are all foreplay to you,
and we're all damn proud of you because of it.
You love Snarry, and Snarry loves you.
What HP Slash Fanfiction Pairing Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla
Okayyyy. You know, if it weren't for the Big Gigantic Teacher/Student problem, and the underage problem, and the not-finding-each-other-physically-attractive problem, I could live with that. Anyway, it's better than Harry/Draco.
Rounding off the HP related soul searching was this:

Hermione Granger is your Hunk of Burnin' Love.
Who Is Your Gryffindor Hunk of Burnin' Love?
brought to you by Quizilla
She's scary. Brilliant, but scary. Might be interesting.

Date: 2003-07-01 02:11 pm (UTC)1. Tonks (eat your heart out)
2. Sirius/Remus (which I could actually buy, were it not for the fact that Sirius was *so* into James)
3. Dean Thomas (gonna have to fight Ginny for him)
Katie
But that constant hair change is so yesterday!
Date: 2003-07-01 02:47 pm (UTC)Definitely - but that was at 15, wasn't it?
Date: 2003-07-02 02:40 pm (UTC)LOL. Still can't get over the fact that I'm now a Harry Potter slash reader and a *shipper*! Two fan groups I've always found really strange, and was pretty certain I'd never become a part of. Just goes to show - again - that you should never say 'never' when it comes to predicting your own behaviour...
Ah, but Sirius is still...
Date: 2003-07-02 09:39 pm (UTC)Re: Ah, but Sirius is still...
Date: 2003-07-03 01:34 am (UTC)So what? Are having a thing for James and having a thing for Remus mutually exclusive? ;-) Plus, he never really got a chance to get over James, actually probably never really got a chance *with* James *at all*, plus there's the whole guilt thing, so of course he has an issue.
Doesn't mean he needs to be solely interested in James.
Of course it's not mutually exclusive <g>
Date: 2003-07-03 08:15 am (UTC)Ahh, you should know me better;
Date: 2003-07-03 09:49 am (UTC)[Hmpf's first slash fic preview (Remus' POV, during OotP):
"If all I can have is this pain then I'll embrace it willingly; it is so much more than I have had all these years. I know I should hope for better days (...) but I've forgotten how to hope. Grasping the moment and holding it as fast as I can is about all I can do."]
WAFF stuff is boring... ;-) And of course Sirius is messed up - in so many ways! That's why I'm interested in him. Which gives me a reason to repeat what I've said many times before: with my unfortunate taste in (fictional) men, it's probably a blessing in disguise I haven't found a man to my liking in RL yet! ;-)
Yay Angst!
Date: 2003-07-03 10:13 am (UTC)Hmm. You should read the fic I recced in my LJ a few days ago.

Quite possibly the best thing I've read on that particular pairing so far. Lots of 'I wish *I* had written that!' sentences. *g*
Glad you like the snippet. I'm about to leave for the excursion, and I hope I'll be able to write in the evenings and possibly on the trip, too.

Date: 2003-07-01 05:40 pm (UTC)Torch's Lies, Damn Lies, and Agriculture (http://www.strangeplaces.net/torch/damnlies.html) is a very funny X-Files crossover.
There's probably a lot more I could recommend if I weren't so terrible at remembering authors and titles.
Thanks!
Date: 2003-07-02 06:50 am (UTC)Ah, good old Krycek, fatal to Federal Employees everywhere...
Re: Thanks!
Date: 2003-07-03 12:22 am (UTC)Ainsley shows up sometime early in season 2, IIRC.
Loved the story -

Date: 2003-07-05 08:40 pm (UTC)West Wing is a peculiar fandom. It's split almost exactly into two groups: the Josh/Donna shippers and the CJ/Toby-Josh/Sam shippers. My personal preferences run towards the second group, although that's partly because that seems to have the better (read: multifandom) writers. Not that that there's not good J/D out there, but it's limited, in my opinion. There's also very little gen, which is a damn shame.
I'm sort of in a rush right now, so I'm afraid I can't give you tailored recs (I also don't really know your taste) but Sab and Punk run a kick-ass rec site at www.grapefruithead.com/ourboys. It's definitely worth checking out.
Thanks for the site link!
Date: 2003-07-06 01:06 am (UTC)My slash-dar must be off. I didn't see the Josh/Sam; the male/male relationship which looks more like love than friendship to me was the Leo/Jed Bartlet one...
Re: Thanks for the site link!
Date: 2003-07-06 08:27 am (UTC)Hmm. My memory is not at its greatest right now, so I'm having a difficult time thinking of stories. Luna writes mostly CJ/Toby, but she writes a pitch-perfect CJ and I imagine that she has several gen stories at www.sparkgirl.com
Consider me ever more disgruntled that...
