Jonathan Frakes is back with directing this one, and so is President Laira Rillak, though she gets only one scene. I’m still hoping Mary Chieffo will get to play the much announced Breen Evil Overlady.

After the season opener faked us out by saddling Saru with the “one more mission” type of tropes usually coming before a character gets killed off only to let him live, it looks like the season (and series) closer will endanger him again, and naturally this makes me worry this time he will bite the dust. Don’t do it, show! Let the Kelpian live! This said, I continue to love how he and T’Rina are written as a pairing, with T’Rina managing the great balance of Vulcan restraint and logic/mission prioritizing with deeply felt emotion, and far from protesting Saru’s volunteering for the encounter with Thalassa (spelling?) the Breen Overlady considering him the best choice as well.

Meanwhile on Discovery, Stamets, not being a Vulcan, is still overprotective but in the end it’s Adira’s call. I can understand and partly share the objection that the whole Stamets-Adira-Culber queer space family thing happened too quickly in s3, but by s5 it’s really well established, and it’s worth remembering Adira is still very young (they were sixteen in s3, and I think we’re only two years later in canon time as well). (Another objection, that after their initial introduction the show never did much with Adira-as-a-symbiont-carrier and simply continued to write them as a teenager is equally valid, but again: it’s been consistent that way, and there’s the Ezri precedent, with Ezri coming across as a young woman in 98% of all lher scenes. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that the characters are thought of and refered as “Adira” (not “Tal”) and “Ezri” both on a Doylist and Watsonian level, whereas Jadzia Dax was usually referred to as “Dax” when alive in most, though not all cases, and as Jadzia only after her death and when alive usually to differentiate her from earlier carriers of the Dax symbiont.) Adira on their own part of the mission with Rhys also presents a character combination we didn’t get before and underlines one of the nicest aspects of how the crew of Discovery has grown since their jittery early s1 stage - the mutual support of each other. Michael and Book making up after her self knowledge enlightenment from last week presumably sets the stage for a happy ending in the finale, though again, if the show makes Michael’s promise to Saru that she will stay alive because she has a wedding to attend come true in a monkey’s paw way by letting him die and have the wedding be her own to Book instead of Saru’s to T’Rina, will gnash my teeth.

I do appreciate all the little throwaway details about Breen culture, now with the terms for feasts/parties, and the fact that flirting is okay with them. :)

Yeah they were laying things on thick this episode. I do recall they did reshoots once they knew it was the final season but if that bodes ill or not I don't know. They can't think it's a good idea to kill him off at the end, surely. :(

This episode was fine but the end... Michael going into the portal felt like a foregone conclusion.
