[personal profile] ffutures asked me this. My rather boring reply: Chocolate, first and foremost. Not dark chocolate, sad for my health to say. I'm more the milk chocolate or nougat type. In the winter and pre Christmas, I'm also very fond of Lebkuchen, which aren't quite the same thing as gingerbread in English, taste deliciously and hail from my home region of Franconia.

In the summer, when it's really hot and chocolate thus isn't an option, I like fried mushrooms with salad especially. Eating that combination never fails to put me into a good mood. Ice cream: is fine now and then, but not comfort food.

The other days

Thanks! I've tried Lebkuchen a couple of times, Lidl stores sell it around Christmas in the UK, it's nice. Hadn't thought of fried mushrooms with salad, I usually eat them raw if it isn't a cooked meal, I'll have to give it a try.

Lidl (and Aldi) have remarkably good Lebkuchen. There's a sort of inverse price to deliciousness relationship of Lebkuchen at UK shops that I cannot understand.

I'd always assumed it was the German origin of both stores that had something to do with it?

Lidl does run some rather nice European food promotions from time to time, where they sell European brands that I never see in Tesco/Sainbury's/Morrisons.

Even in my pre-vegan days, I could never love gingerbread, which meant Lebkuchen were out. A pity, because I love the idea and the look of them. (And the smell! They smell delicious).

This does sound like an opportunity to see if they can be veganified ... this is how ideas start!

:D You can have shares if this leads to me writing a surprise best-selling cookbook on veganized Franconian desserts and cakes.

I asked a work colleague, and she suggested maple syrup may solve the consistency issue I had considered.

Maple syrup does improve just about everything. Even if it doesn't fix the consistency, fragments of maple-syrup-flavoured food sounds like a good thing.

When you say fried mushrooms, do you mean breaded and fried or sauteed? Both are delicious, I'm just curious!

I love lebkuchen, and also leckerli! I can buy imported German lebkuchen here, and a local baker makes beautiful lecklerli and stollen. My seasonal treats!

I like lebuchen, but the stuff we get in the UK is terribly sweet - I don't know if it's the same in GErmany. Maybe, I think many of the brands we see are Germans.

By mushrooms do you mean champignons or is there a wider variety of mushrooms available? I've heard that in a lot of countries they only ever eat champignons...
