Jun. 9th, 2005 06:35 pmIn the latest Astonishing X-Men, the one with a certain handsome bald man on the cover, which I got weeks later as usual, the final image made me go fangirl and squee. Not as loud as
andrastewhite who after all is this character's No.1 fan, but squee nonetheless. Darling Joss and his Daddy issues. And I'm really looking forward to see his take on Charles Xavier after this appetizer. Loved that Joss reversed what even a relative X-Men newbie like myself knows to be a common cliché. Instead of knocking Xavier out first and then letting the team deal with the villain of the hour, our man Joss lets the team go down first (and I have to admit it filled me with an unholy glee that Wolverine went down early on - not that I dislike Logan, it's just that the Wolverine-centricity of much of the fandom has its effects on me sometimes) and then lets Charles Xavier be the calvary. Can't wait to see the Charles/ Danger (Room) fight, especially since it's bound to be a psychological one - and we've had our share of fisticuffs now really.
In other news, Agent Brand the ruthless and snarky is quickly becoming a favourite villain. In a Kai Winn kind of way (i.e. I totally disagree with her politics, I just find her nifty and interesting). Her reply to the "I sense destruction" thing was clearly Joss working out Counselor Troi issues. Her scenes also reminded us again that there is a mole in the X-Mansion among the students. My money is still on Hisako.
Sadly, the other snarky woman, Emma, still doesn't get much dialogue (I want more Emma Frost, damnit!), but there was her intriguing final scene. So what is it that the Danger Room knows? Given that it's important enough for Emma to let herself be taken out, and at a point where no one else is around who could still hear, I'm going to make an extremely wild and new guess (my old guess was that she has some ambiguous scheme going which isn't betrayal but not something Scott would condone, either, which might still be true in addition) and say... she's pregnant.
Also? Loved that the entity chooses a female form. And not just because it fits with earlier things, such as the Sentinel referring to it as "her". The way it taunted Emma about Scott in the last-but-one-issue was distinctly bitchy. And it's confrontation with Xavier won't be yet another father and son thing. Bring on the daughter versus father!
In other news, the beta'd version of my latest Star Wars story, "Five Senses", is finally up, and I wrote a short Alias vignette about Nadia, unspoilery for anything but the general season 4 setup, "Living in Translation".

Date: 2005-06-09 04:57 pm (UTC)I think you're right about Emma - there have been hints that "a big change" was coming in Scott and Emma's relationship in the letters pages of some other titles (notably Phoenix Endsong - which, if you haven't read it, I highly reccomend for snarky Emma and moments of pure snark in Kitty Pryde!). I don't know why it would be so important for her to keep the pregnancy secret, though.
And I could definately do without Wolverine in a few storylines. Scott, Kitty, Hank, Emma, Peter, even the Cuckoos are more interesting characters that Logan at this point. It's like Logan's character stopped developing about 6 years ago, and the rest of the X-Men went on with their complicated and twisted lives.

Is Phoenix: Endsong available in collected form, i.e. could I order it via Amazon?

Date: 2005-06-10 02:57 am (UTC)Yeah, and wasn't there a suggestion earlier that Emma's secret was tied into her reason for wanting Kitty on the team? Not saying the pregnancy theory is wrong, I'm just wondering what it is about the secret that would make Emma let herself be possibly (though highly improbably) killed. Cursed delays!

I wonder if you would mind if I used exerpts from your "five senses" story in an English class test (11th grade) on SF stories. We have been doing characterizations in stories as one topic, and also watched the new SW movie in English.
The Excerpts from your story would make one option, the other would be a story by F. Brown (we have also discussed sories of his in class)
And btw.: The box with the enterprise DVDs is on the way to you (I hope safely this time ... )
