Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished its third season, and you may have deduced from the fact I didn't review the remaining episodes that for me, it did not take a turn for the better. The Ortegas episode was probably the most, in lack of a better term, Trekian, not to mention the long awaited one with a focus on Ortegas beyond "I fly the ship", but it shares with far too many ST: SNW episodes the way it is just incredibly derivative, of both other franchises and earlier ST. And the series finale chose to pick my least favourite DS9 plotline and scenario, sigh. To complete my turn to an old grouch, the feeling of this season as Star Trek: The Rom Com didn't help, either. Anyway. I'll always have Discovery and Prodigy in terms of new ST that manages to unite both affection for the past AND originality and the courage to try out new paths and characters.

Given the daily horror show that is the news, it's all the more important to find joy in fannish things, so I was delighted to discover this new Sense 8 vid. Now there was a show celebrating joy and diversity:

Sense 8

And on another joyful note: Yuletide nominations have started!

I was wondering about your SNW thoughts, though yeah obviously there weren't good with the lack of reviews.

Mine have been pretty much nothing but complaining. With the exception of Ortegas episode but even there the non-Ortegas parts weren't great and the ending reveal was terrible, and contains some of the worst continuity fix since S2 Disco ended with 'and we'll never talk of this again'.

I think you struck the nail on the head with your last post when you said they took all the wrong lessons from s2, given the uptick in fun and/or gimmick based episodes. (and an obvious interest more in being a TOS precurser than SNW being its own thing)

Are you holding out for S4 being better or dropping it if you don't mind me asking?

That sounds like a very sensible, healthy policy.

I still haven't gotten around to Prodigy yet (or finished Disco shhhhhh) but it's been so sad to see the reactions to this season on my timeline.

Very excited for a new Sense8 vid when I get home from sea! I've already been over the vidnotes in anticipation lol

I'm vaguely curious if SNW will course correct in season 5 (which is apparently going to start filming later this week), but I'm not holding my breath.

The showrunners are already on a "we were totally rushed due to strikes and people kept leaving!" apology tour, so I'm cautiously optimistic that season 4 will see a return to the mediocrity of season 1 and 2 -- but season 3 has just been ruinously bad for so many characters that I'm not sure it's possible to course correct. And it doesn't help that Anson Mount has been a jackass on social media, making "actually that recently murdered far right influencer had some good points" and sharing AI slop.

I just need to figure out this "nominating without taking part" bit - because I am aware the Christmas disaster will inevitably happen
