[livejournal.com profile] saava asked about favourite couples in books, TV and movies. Which is fun. Hm, let's see. In no particular order:
Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff: Not in any film version (though the one with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche comes close), but in the novel. Utterly selfish, utterly obsessed with another and utterly fascinating.

Angelique and Joffrey, in Anne Golons Angelique novels: laugh, I dare you. They were among the first historical novels I read (the very first was Sinuhe The Egyptian). To this day, I maintain Golon did a fine thing with those two, both interesting, with brains and sex appeal, and without the emotional masochism Benzoni's Cathérine engaged in.

Beatrice and Benedick, in Much Ado About Nothing: My favourite bickering couple. Was delighted to see them played by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson.

Romeo and Juliet: I was twelve and cried my eyes out. No matter who plays them on stage or in film, it works to this day. It's not quite true Shakespeare invented romantic love with this one, but he came close.

Sidenote: Additional merits for Romeo/Mercutio, something only my adult self discovered. I still blame Zefirelli, though.

Not sure whether this counts, because it's history: Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II. To avoid the dodginess of whether or not to include history, let's say Eleanor and Henry as embodied by Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole in "The Lion in Winter." "He married out of love a woman out of legend. Neither in Rome nor Alexandria has there been such a queen." Love/hate as an art form. Mix with politics and stir.

Moving on to the small screen: Blake and Avon, and Avon and Servalan, in Blake's 7. Neither is exactly a romance, but both are fascinating relationships. Woe to the antihero who manages to become obesseed with both the hero AND the villainess. But my, fun for the audience.

No, no 'ship from the Jossverse. I'm one big equal opportunity 'shipper there. Also, I already wrote about my take on the Jossverse 'shipping here.

Magneto/Xavier. Theirloveissotragic. What do you mean, it's not canon?

Dream, the third of The Endless, you are in charge
of the Dreaming, all imagination and
creativity, everyone knows your beautiful
realm, but none truly understand it. You are
dark and brooding, creative, and spend a lot of
time by yourself, just thinking. You are almost
as serious as Destiny, but not quite. Everyone
is enchanted by you, but you keep them all at a
distance, even when you shouldn't.

Which Endless are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

Hm, last time I tried an Endless quiz, I was Destruction. Keeping with the earlier theme, should I be worried about my love life now?
