Okay then...
Jan. 6th, 2011 02:36 pmSome months back I linked the post where the Beatles were sorted into the four Hogwarts Houses (as well as a little argument with two of the choices). Turns out there has been a lot of Harry Potter/Beatles action going on on the internet. For starters, two posts comparing the Fab Four with the Marauders (that would be James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew to only casual HP fans). The posters all agree on Remus for George, but one sees Sirius as John and one as Paul, with James getting assigned Paul and John respectively. Peter Pettigrew presents a problem to both posters; one solves that by declaring Pete Best instead of Ringo as Peter (unfair to poor dumped Pete, methinks).

Me? I don't think any of the equations really work. I mean, I am very very amused by the comparison in the "bad decisions" criterium ("James: Making Peter the Secret-Keeper. Paul: Mentioning buying song catalogues to Michael Jackson"), not to mention the "hair" criterium ("Remus: can get very hairy once a month. George: Can get very hairy in the later sixties and early seventies."). But I'm not really sold on either version. Sirius and John both have the angry young man from privileged background going rebel thing going, not to mention the impulsiveness, the act first, think later attitude, while James and John share glasses, devotion to to their wives (well, the second one in John's case), an occasionally cruel sense of humour and an early death. Contrary to both posters I don't think Paul really fits either James or Sirius. (I suspect he got assigned the respective guy because of the shared gangleader/bff status, and I can see that, but the personalities really don't fit. Where's the combination of workoholism, charm, at times really ruthless ambition and sentiment? Of course, this all ties in my Paul-is-a-Slytherin-not-a-Gryffindor argument, so...) And sure, you can call Remus "The Quiet One", but if we go by the burning-resentment-for-underprivileged-position-building-over-the-years criterium, surely George is more a fit for Peter Pettigrew than either Pete "Dumped on the eve of success" Best or Ringo? If you define Ringo as the one who manages to stay friends with everyone as well as by his social status (the quondam Richard Starkey was by far the poorest of the Beatles in terms of origin), he's more a candidate for Remus, though Ringo did what Remus never managed to, i.e. stand up to his friends when he thought they were acting crappily. (I.e. telling John he was going too far when recording "How do you sleep?")
Having concluded that the Marauders = Beatles thing is amusing but not ultimately convincing, of course the next thing was to try and check whether Beatles songs match HP characters. Turns out the vidders have been very busy.

What's sadly missing is either a Voldemort or a Dumbledore character vid to the tune of Sexy Sadie. I'm just saying. Other suggestions?
