Fanfic recs
Oct. 23rd, 2008 12:40 pmThe cold persists, so I take stories along with medicine:
Doctor Who:
A list of the lost: The Fifth Doctor and his companions, from Adric to Peri. Great voices from everyone; my favourite bit is probably the Nyssa section, which brings up the fact she sees her murdered father's stolen body each time they run into the Master, something all but ignored by the show after Logopolis.
Torchwood:
Could've been anyone: in a Ianto-centric fandom, it took me over a season to warm up to the guy at all, and though I like him now, he's still nowhere near my favourite. However, this Ianto pov story is fantastic, using the ensemble as it does; the interaction between the team is dead-on, they all come across vividly, especially Owen, the Jack/Ianto elements are remarkably unschmoopy, and the humour is very Torchwood:
Jack snorts. “I do have some standards, Owen.”
The team all stare at him incredulously.
“Has it really got to the point where you all willingly believe that I’m capable of having sex with a puppet?” Jack asks.
They all remain silent, as metal screams and twists above them.
Iron Man (movieverse):
Now that the dvd is there, we get even better vids. Check out

Date: 2008-10-23 01:41 pm (UTC)as for nyssa and nyssa's dad: must be one of old who's real mis-steps, not pumping that moment for drama, because it should have been. then again, angsty/whiney!nyssa would have been part of a very different show so i can sort of see why they did it.

Date: 2008-10-23 03:19 pm (UTC)Well, it's hinted in Castrovalva "Oh, how I hate that face!" and in Time-Flight too... but Nyssa is so dignified and so proud that it stays almost-subtext. I like it this way, in Castrovalva. (It is nothing new after Logopolis, where it was cruel enough to her, and for her it's basically the same adventure). In Time-Flight, though, it's too bad we can't have a confrontation with Good-Xeraphim!Nyssa and Evil-Xeraphim!Master...
I have to read this fic, I guess ! :-)
