Idle thought of the day, caused by hearing the audio commentary for the DW season 4 episode Midnight, in which David Tennant, RTD and Alice Troughton praise young Colin Morgan - who plays Jethro in Midnight - and correctly predict he'll be a hit with Merlin, plus seeing the "Et tu, Jethro" moment when Jethro gives in to the lynch mentality:

1.) Midshipman Frame, aka Alonso, from Voyage of the Damned
2.) Quintus, in Fires of Pompeii
3.) Sgt. Ross Jenkins, from The Sontaran Strategem/The Poison Sky
4.) Luke Rattigan, same episodes as Ross
5.) Jethro in Midnight

= secret subtext of season 4: Doctor bonds with good looking dark haired young male sulky adolescents and/or young servicemen? And here people claim he has only eyes for female blondes!

*laughs* It's probably all because he misses the Master...

Obviously! We may deduce the Master's first incarnation was dark-haired. Actually, we know that from the brief flashback in Sound of Drums. Presumably there was a lot of adolescent sulking and rebelling, too.

Putting the 'Turlough as Koschei hangover' theory in a wider context. Thanks, NewWho.

Verily. When I first say Turlough's introduction episode, aside from thinking "it's freakin' Draco Malfoy!!!!" I was at a loss to explain why the Doctor takes him along. Not that Turlough doesn't display endearing qualities LATER in the show, but not during his introduction.

Hm, could be. Clearly meeting Five brought back some memories...

Commentary? There's commentaries? Where? I didn't see any mention of commentaries on my set! I checked special features on each disc and I've got two DT video diaries, deleted scenes and on the spare disc there is cut-down Confidentials. How did I miss the commentary option? *sigh*

There are commentaries for nearly every episode. Quite often with DT and CT, and/or Rusty, and/or someone else involved in the making of the episode in question! Check out the "set up" option.

I think the clear subtext is that if you are a good-looking dark-haired young male sulky adolescent and/or young serviceman and you bond with the Doctor, you will go on to have your own wildly successful TV show. Two out of five! That is totally a significant number. I await the other three to follow.

Well, Christian Cooke had Demons, but I've got no idea if that is meant to have more than one season. Still, Three out of Five!

Weeeeell, as Ten would say, Christian Cooke, who played Ross, is currently filming The Last Van Helsing, playing Luke Van Helsing. It sounds like a total BTVS rip-off which misses the main point (there is this male Chosen one, born to slay vampires, and his librarian mentor...), but who knows, it might be successful and thus Mr. Cooke could follow Russell Tovey and Colin Morgan.

Clearly bonding with the Doctor is the way to go.

...which, by the way, seems to be the same show as the one I mention above. Apparently, there was some sort of copyright infringement - with the distributors of Van Helsing, mind you, not with Stoker's heirs.

Hell, you could argue the same for John Barrowman--and I could make some horrible innuendo about young (ish) male costars and the Doctor's touch, but I'm not sure how to get the words right.

All I can say is that I like the Doctor exploring the cliches.
