Good news and old musings
Nov. 20th, 2003 10:12 amSo I take it a certain unjustly cancelled show has been given four TV movies, hm? Cheers for Farscape, and the 'Scapers. I am looking forward to the results, though it occurs to me that much as I love Farscape (yes, including season 4, though stuff like the tag scene of Twice Shy irritated me as much as the next fan), and as much as I thought the cancellation - and the way it was done, after the shooting of season 4 instead of with some warning at the beginning - was massively unfair -, it never utterly possessed me in the way, say, Bablyon 5 or DS9 did. Or Buffy, but BTVS is a special case. With the exception of Restless, one could argue that each of the season finales would wave worked as a series finale if for some reason Joss hadn't managed to get the show renewed. I would have been sad and heartbroken etc. but it wouldn't have left so many things dangling the way Bad Timing did for Farscape.
(Angel is another special case, for different reasons. Arguably both To Shanshu in LA and Home would have worked as series finales if cancellation had happened, but none of the other season finales would have. Not so coincidentally, the periods after Shanshu and Home were the only ones where I looked forward to the respective new seasons with unbridled enthusiasm. I had loved season 2 up to Disharmony and hated the Pylea arc, so There is no place like Grlbtz left me with mixed feelings, and season 3 to this day remains to me the low point of the show, best symbolized in the scenes where Cordelia ascends. I remember telling
rozk afterwards I wouldn't mind cancellation for AtS now. Season 4 changed my mind, obviously. BTW, this reminds me I have to bribe
cavendish or
bimo again to send me the recent three episodes of season 5, which so far I also like.)
In celebration of Farscape's return to the screen, here are some intriguing thoughts on Scorpius and John, and the parallels of their respective quests, from
astrogirl2. And a great challenge for speculation from
neuralclone - how would John Crichton have done in Babylon 5, and Scorpius, and the others, and how, conversely, would Sheridan & Co. do in the Unchartered Territories? The discussion is here.
Other than the Farscape news, I see a "Ten Unpopular Fannish Opinions" meme is making the rounds. Had a brief look at some and found that while I share one or two with several friends, they aren't necessarily the same one or twos, so I decided to give it a go:
- Anakin Skywalker: love the character, adore Hayden Christensen's portrayal of him
- like
cadesama, I'm utterly indifferent to Han Solo
- I still can't see Wolverine/Rogue (actually, my X-Men movieverse pairings of choice are boringly canonical - Magneto/Mystique and Magneto/Xavier,
and what do you mean M/X is not canon?)
- nor can I see Sirius/Remus (I can do the suspension of disbelief thing if the writer is
hmpf or
penknife, but it is an effort each time)
- was indifferent towards Willow when everyone adored her in seasons 1-3, found her interesting and did like her when most fans turned against her in
seasons 6 and 7
- Buffy Summers is my favourite character of BTVS, and I happen to think she's the most interesting of the Sunnydalians, too
- making Faramir tempted for a longer period of time for TTT movie version was the right thing to do
- couldn't care less about Legolas (meaning I like his portrayal on screen well enough, he's just the least interesting member of the Fellowship for me)
- I like the SW prequels slightly more than the OT
- and I like the later seasons of BTVS slightly more than the earlier seasons.
Lastly, I'll leave you with a quote from the Peter Jackson/Fran Walsh/Philippa Boyens commentary on why they didn't use Elrond's sons as characters in the movies. Quoth Philippa:
"Because that would have meant casting two more gifted, impossible beautiful men and frankly, we were slightly sick of them."

When you come to Braunschweig, would you like me to give you burnt copies of the last few episodes? I have the VCDs (not the SVCDs - yet) and lots of blank CDs. That way you don't have to bribe anyone. :-)

Date: 2003-11-20 02:30 am (UTC)I know, but they are my opinions. And the question was for unpopular opinions, and frankly, I thought statements like "I love Darla" (which I do) or "I think DS9 is the best written of the Treks" would have been cheating considering that they might not be the attitude of the overwhelming majority but are shared by enough people not to be unpopular.
Thank you for the offer - I certainly would appreciate it (the mail doesn't always work).

Date: 2003-11-20 01:20 am (UTC)Consider me bribed *gÜ
Date: 2003-11-20 02:06 am (UTC)So the bribe has been more than sufficient *g*
I hoped that would work *g*
Date: 2003-11-20 02:29 am (UTC)bribe
Date: 2003-11-20 08:00 am (UTC)Seems like it, that you bribed
And sorry for retaining radio-silence for quite a while, it has been hell of a week

Agreed again. Although I was never indifferent to Willow, I just liked her more in Season 6 and 7. I liked everyone more in Seasons 6 and 7, which is highly unpopular :)
Buffy Summers is my favourite character of BTVS, and I happen to think she's the most interesting of the Sunnydalians, too
Agree, agree, agree. A lot.
and I like the later seasons of BTVS slightly more than the earlier seasons
Now I'm starting to think that I am you ;)

Is it ever. So good to find other later seasons lovers, though, not to mention people who like Buffy the character.
