You know the guilty of feeling of liking something though it shamelessly pushes every cheap button there is? Yes, I saw Love Actually and liked it very much. Everyone is great fun in it, but I think my favourites are Emma Thompson whose husband (Alan Rickman) is on the verge of cheating on her, and whoever played the has-been rock star who out-Richards Keith Richards. Colin Firth is also adorable as the novelist falling in love with a woman whose language he does not speak. Heck, everyone is adorable. (That's why I know I shouldn't fallen for it.) Well, except for Billy Bob Thornton, and he's not supposed to be. Remember my question a few entries back about whether one can imagine movies that are commercially successful in the US featuring an American villain? Well, that has been answered. Unless Love, Actually doesn't make cash in the States?

Mind you... I can't imagine that the scene in which Grant's PM has had enough and calls it quits on the "special relationship" gets the audience cheering in America the way it does over here. That's what I mean with "cheap button", too. The idea of a British Prime Minister standing up to an American President who looks like George Bush is blatant wish fulfillment and completely unrealistic (plus what does it in effect achieve? will the PM now really refuse the next American request? withdraw troops? we're not told), and Curtis, his constant digs at Tony Blair notwithstanding, knows it, too. But I still enjoyed the scene.
End
Meanwhile, the recent watching of Angel episodes has left me hungry for some fanfiction. Is there any good post-Lineage Wesley fic out there? Any Spike and Angel (or Spike/Angel) during or post-Destiny?

And lastly, tip of the day: 'Tis the season. [livejournal.com profile] altariel1 has done the impossible - applied the Dickensian premise of "A Christmas Tale" to Denethor, who does make a great Scrooge, and made it work. Read it here. I have to confess the flashback to Boromir and Faramir as boys had me all misty-eyed again. For which I blame Richard Curtis. Bloody Christmas sentimentality. Bah, humbug! But I still want to read the story again...

It's apparently made around $43 million in the states so far, which isn't great, but is certainly respectable when you consider what it's up against -- and the fact that it just went into wide release.

I can't imagine that the scene in which Grant's PM has had enough and calls it quits on the "special relationship" gets the audience cheering in America the way it does over here.

There was a fair amount of applause and laughter from the audience when I saw it. I think most of us were pretty behind Grant's character and willing to go along with the device.

I'd say it's proven then...

...American audiences, just like audiences all over the world, cheer for characters, not nationalities. Go, you!

Me too, and I don't have the Love Actually excuse *g*. Gorgeous story that worked wonderfully. Thanks for the link.

I haven't seen Love Actually yet but I've been drooling over the cast so I might drag J along to see it at the weekend.

Drag him, drag him!

You need some Christmas cheer before RotK comes along, after all...

Thank you very much for the kind comments, and for the plug. I'm glad the flashback to the Brothers 'Mir stayed just the right side of syrupy... :-)

you're most welcome...

...and you couldn't write syrupy if you tried. Not fortified with B7 and DS9 experience. I bow to your greatness.

It's true - B7 and DS9 are virtually syrup-free. Well, if you don't count the adrenalin & soma or the root beer! ;-D

His name's Bill Nighy, he's one of the names rumoured for the new Doctor Who.

And using his full name of William Nighy he was the actor who played Sam Gamgee in the BBC R4 version of The Lord of the Rings!

And he was in the BBC adaptation of 'The Wife of Bath's Tale', which really has no relevance whatsoever but I just thought I'd mention it.

Wow. I never would have guessed!

You really must see that film to appreciate the, err, difference...

Also, if I were you, I'd start preparing John for the RotK impact, on the lines of "you remember the Christmas they broadcast the B7 finale..."

The omens are good that I will. Bill Nighy has done an amazing amount of radio, TV and now film work. A part in Harry Potter can't be far off *g*.

You may be right. The constant litany of "As long as nothing bad happens to Gollum" is starting to get a little worrying.

I nearly fell off my chair the first time he said it. He has a Gollum mug and mousemat too...

Well, *I* squealed in unmitigated glee, but I'm not your typical American.
