1. The first time Arandis saw Curzon Dax, she was less than impressed.
2. Her name hasn’t always been Alice.
3. Garibaldi knew she was trouble from the moment he first saw her.
4. She barely notices Baltar’s presence in the raptor back to Galactica, until he starts to talk, asking her to intercede for Gaeta with the Admiral.
5. “You want me to hypnotize you?” the Doctor repeated, amazed.
6. Tell me a story, John says.
7. Jo was spending the holidays with her family, of course.
8. The Skrull waiting for her in the NYPD interrogation room which had been temporarily annexed for the purpose was the third, and he looked as numb as she felt.
9. The Breakworld mission had cost ten SWORD agents their lives.
10. In all his years as a political operative, Toby Ziegler has never participated in a successful campaign.
11. She needed a crystal, pure and simple.

Hm, the only pattern I see is that I'm fond of starting a story with a statement that's supposed to make the reader curious. #3 is also a deliberate riff on about a thousand noir/ hard boiled type of stories. Also, I'm a multifandom person, which is not news, and stories including Abigail Brand somehow inspire the longest opening sentences.
