Gratitude

Before the Christmas excuse for sappiness runs out, I want to bring up something that’s on my mind these days. This year, I went from lurking to actually starting a livejournal, and this turned out to enrich my fannish life considerably. So a few thank yous are in order, for presents not just this season brought to me, in no particular order:

- [livejournal.com profile] raincitygirl, who spontanously gave me the invite codes just because of a reply I made to one of her entries

- [livejournal.com profile] deborah_judge, who through her splendid Lennier stories and her discussions got me from moaning about the lack of Londo, G’Kar and Vir fanfiction, which I had been doing for years, to actually doing something about it, i.e. writing Babylon 5 fanfic

- [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite, whose journal I had stalked lurked at for eons, similarily inspired me to write "Five Things Which Never Happened To Warren" through a debate and went on being my accomplice in musical insanity; considering that I love Andraste’s writing – X-Men, Farscape, her Watchmen story, Buffy, her Sandman/ Arthurian tales crossover… you name it, she’s great at it – ever since finding it on the net (the first story I read was Guessing Games, I think, a Mystique pov – this was just one great rush

- [livejournal.com profile] hobsonphile, who created "Enemies and Allies" on the spot for Centauri and Narn fanfiction and is so generous with icons and inspiration

- [livejournal.com profile] cadesama, who put an end to my frustration of being the sole Anakin Skywalker fan in the lj world (not to mention the sole prequel fan), and whose few choice SW fanfics continue to make me hunger for more from her

- [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra and [livejournal.com profile] penknife, authors of rich, layered X-Men fanfic, who really must write a DS9 Dominion war Nog point of view epic!

- [livejournal.com profile] alara_r who writes and comments Star Trek (all incarnations) like no one else does and this year came up with the best kind of constructive criticism – she took a canon idea handled badly (the Q continuum war on Voyager) and made it into the source of a breathtaking series of angsty, dark vignettes on a universe torn apart by (nearly) omnipotent entities

- My two KHs, [livejournal.com profile] honorh and [livejournal.com profile] kathh, who are my oldest net friends, back from my Highlander days, and continue to be a source of delight, insight and steadfast friendship

- the same is true for [livejournal.com profile] bimo, who founded the first German multifandom fanfic archive (and the situation for German fanfic was dire back then, believe me) and hence is a pioneer in addition to an all-round-nice person

- [livejournal.com profile] butterfly who writes amazing Jossverse commentary and managed to explain to me what on earth the appeal of Draco was supposed to be by using canon, not fanon (still can’t stand Draco – actually even Dudley Dursley holds more of my interest – but am prepared to acknowledge Butterfly’s interpretation makes sense within book canon)

- [livejournal.com profile] hmpf, without whom I never would have watched Farscape; she came, she provided CD-Roms, she conquered – and this year she even co-produced Poison, aka the first John/Scorpius vid (see earlier entry about “one sick bastard” pairing)!

- [livejournal.com profile] rozk, who is Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, a (political and social) crusader, a Noel Coward character and a fellow fan all wrapped in one fascinating package; one always feels like taking notes of her conversation when being with her (a bit like knowing Oscar Wilde, I imagine), which is one of the reasons why I’m so grateful she keeps a livejournal.

This is by no means a complete list, but is hopefully representative for my gushing all over you, fellow lj’ers. You guys rock. Or, to quote the immortal Norma Desmond: You wonderful people out there in the dark!

And thank you for your LJ entries, which never fail to entertain, educate, and inform!

You know, Garak would be disgusted with us. Ditto for Avon.*g*

[livejournal.com profile] altariel1 wrote some great B7 fanfic. She specializes in Anna Grant.

Wish I knew Farscape or Babylon 5, so that I could write you a story. I'm still feeling my way with Discworld, Sandman and Good Omens fic, and it's been a long, long time since I've written anything Methos-related.

one fandom at a time *g*

Besides, there is more than enough Methos-centric fanfic, whereas there is very little Sandman of quality, so the selfish reader in me wants you to write plenty of Sandman first before you move on to other fandoms. Same for Discworld - there are some good stories, but not a lot. And I like your efforts in both so very much that I'm very Oliver-Twist like: More, please!

Well, that's not too hard. I love Sandman and I love Discworld. And I find I can actually relax and enjoy writing in those fandoms. Which is good.

Aw. Am thrilled that I at least make sense.

But yeah, I didn't bother to look up fanfic until I'd already fallen for the character - so I already had Draco set in my mind and no amount of fanon can waver him from being the completely horrid, terribly bratty, and hopelessly yearning boy that I adore in canon.
