Lost 6.11 Happily Ever After
Apr. 7th, 2010 10:48 amBefore I get to my review, something about another show: I'm so writing a big post on Damages, third season once it's wrapped up. Woo, and also, hoo.
Now, on to the island. And Los Angeles.
'Twas the episode of the time/dimension travellers, with Desmond, Daniel and Eloise all in it. Also the one providing a pretty definite clue as to the nature of the Rebootverse. When Eloise says "you've got all you ever wanted, even what is most important to you, my husband's respect", she not only shows she's aware of another timeline (without having had a near-death experience, a la Charlie, or a puzzled look in the mirror, a la Jack, Kate and Sawyer/James Ford), but indicates the current one is formed by Our Heroes unfulfilled wishes. Wish-fulfillment certainly accounts for some of the characters' fates here - Ben has a good relationship with Alex and with his father, and a job which while occasionally frustrating is something he likes to do, Locke has an ongoing relationship with Helen, has come to accept his handicapped state and has found a job he enjoys, Hurley is lucky instead of unlucky with his money, Sawyer never became Sawyer but remained James Ford, became a cop and has a partnership with Miles, Kate and Claire were able to help each other instead of Claire becoming half-mad - but not all. Charlie is still suicidal. Sayid is a depressed killer, either way. And however much Desmond wanted Charles Widmore to accept him, he never wanted it as much as a life with Penny, so clearly being Widmore's Trusted Lieutenant wasn't his dream fate.
I'm not sure I buy Daniel/Charlotte as True Love (Daniel always came across as something of a creepy stalker in that relationship, if you ask me), and the tragic thing about Claire and Charlie is that undeniably sweet as they were together, he sacrificed himself on the promise that this would save her and Aaron, and so far, not so much, more the contrary as far as Claire is concerned, but Desmond/Penny of course are the golden couple of the Lostverse(s), so I can thoroughly rejoice in their (re)union in the Rebootverse. Speaking of reunions, we're headed for a big one there. What will happen if all the characters are gathered at one spot? Melting of the 'verses into each other? Dissolving of one? Especially since several of them are dead in Lost Prime.
"Not Penny's Boat": I knew that would be on Charlie's hand - well, that Desmond would see it there - the moment Charlie drove the car into the ocean, but that was a nice frisson causer nonetheless. Also very apropos if you consider that in both cases, Desmond seeing this message alerts him to the fact that Not Everything Is What It Seems. Mind you, if I were the characters, I'd definitely prefer living in the Rebootverse, even Sayid, because in Rebootverse at least Nadia is alive.
Desmond on the island seems in a happy zen state after his trip sideways. Doing what Widmore asks? Fine. Going with Sayid? Fine. You know, I predicted Widmore needs Desmond for a big heroic sacrifice last week, but this acceptence thing makes me suspect Desmond will actually go through with it...
