Every time cynicism about fandom gets the better of me, I'm reminded of how great it can be. As in, lovely fellow fen write stories around one's prompts. In this particular case, it resulted in a new DS9 story, set during early season 6, aka the time with what was arguably the best miniarc of the show. A Jake point of view, co-starring Kira, Ziyal and Quark, and I love it to bits:
Off the record
Among many other things, it reminded me of the soft spot I have for Jake Sisko. He never was one of my absolute favourites (Quark, Garak, Jadzia, in no particular order), abut I always liked him, and found him very accessible to write, far more than his father, which is presumably how I ended up with two Jake-centric stories, while Ben Sisko only has cameos in all of my DS9 tales. Come to think of it it, every other member of the Sisko clan gets featured more than Ben in my stories. Joseph is the other central character in one of the two Jake stories, and he's also in the Prophet story by necessity. Sarah is in two drabbles/vignettes caused by my being so upset with her canonical fate. Ben shows up only briefly in Quark's Day and gets about two line, same in Five things that never happened between Kira and Dukat. Huh. Because as opposed to, say, Bill Adama, I never disliked the Sisko, on the contrary. He just never inspired my muse.
