Firstly: hooray for Yuletide 2010 nominations being open!

Secondly: stupid stereotyping led to the creation of a good meme I'm happy to participate, to wit, posting one's icons showing women, alone or together, in many a fandom:

In conclusion, with female characters as with much else, I out myself as a lover of redheads and a gen person, because I think the only romantically 'shippy icon there is the Brand/Hank one, though there are plenty of friendships and family relationships in the icons showing more than one character.

Now, on to current tv.

Alicia telling Blake right at the start that she doesn't have time for mind games and won't be involved in his with Kalinda was fantastic, especially since she did it in that low key way of hers, making it a side issue and thus making her point even more efficiently. And now we have some family background for her. You know, when surprise!family members are introduced, the show has to explain (but not often does) why we've never seen them before, and for about two thirds of the episode I was sitting there going "yes, Owen is a good new character, but if he loves Alicia and is concerned for her like this, how come we've never seen him during season 1 when she really could have needed the support?" And then, presto, the episode tackled this very point. Smooth, Peter. You'd think cheating (and temporarily imprisoned) husband versus righteous brother is a hopeless position rethorically, but lo and behold, Peter Florick, demonstrating why he's a good politician (and presumably attorney), completely outmaneouvres Owen with that "so where were you during the last half year when I wasn't there?". It takes gall (given what Peter did to Alicia), but it's impressive, and I was both amused and impressed.

Loved, too, that Owen didn't act naively at the start of the episode but deliberate, because of course I can understand Owen wanting to mess with his adulterous brother-in-law. And the awkward family dinner/gay lobbyist convincing of awkwardness was great and the best thing since Alias gave us that dinner where Weiss called Sloane "Arvin" and thus incurred a moment of silence at the table, and Jack rambled about the oil crisis. Grace championing the pro-Palestinian flotilla after Eli had talked the gay Jewish lobbyist's ear off about Peter being absolutely completely pro-Israel was good enough to compete with that.

Alicia's mother multi-divorced as a factor for Alicia remaining married: very believable, as long as it's not presented as the only explanation as to why she hasn't divorced Peter yet.

Case of the week: and we have a new member of the opposition team. I hope we'll see this female attorney again. She's good, and the way she used empathy to disarm Alicia's client was another case in the point [profile] abigail_n made about this show presenting its female characters and their navigating their professional lives in many variations.

Can't say anything about the quality of the Irish accents this time, since I'm not a native, but they sound better than David Boreanaz in the Angelus flashbacks? Also, conspiracy signs as expected. I'm satisfied that Sam has a "real" reason why she quit like Steven does, and guess we'll be teased with those for a while longer, as we are with the fact that Leo knows in both cases. Hoyt really is the new Marshall; I loved that while delivering the expected gag (i.e. Leo's pull lines not working for him), the show gave it a refreshing twist (Hoyt hadn't expected them to work and was really downloading the info all the while during talking).

If I were in the spy business, I would never arrange something to go down in a classical concert in London. That always ended badly in Alias, too. *g*

I hope there's some pay-off for the 700 quid and Sam's sister.
