Dexter 5.04 Beauty and the Beast
Oct. 19th, 2010 03:34 pmIn which Dexter edits truths better than many a politician, and demonstrates detective mojo again.
I really like they keep the bonding/mentoring between Deb and Manzon (that's her name, right? the Venezuelan cop?) up, with now Manzon telling Deb what Deb told her last week. The villain of the hour cutting the hostage's throat in front of Deb was a viscerally terrifying moment that reminded me of the quest to save Tony the amputated victim in season 1 in a way.
While I still have no idea what the other shoe is that surely must drop with Sonya the Übernanny at some point, I enjoy what the show does with her in the meantime. Her response to Dexter leaving her with Harrison all night and half of the morning is exactly right, and it should be interesting to see how he's going to justify himself to someone other than Rita, who was naturally more inclined to accept his excuses. The way he told Sonya the truth and yet editorialized to create a wrong impression made for a neat parallel with how he gained Lumen's trust; he didn't lie to her, either, but the way he phrased it she was bound to believe he became a murderous vigilante in response to Rita's death, rather than having been a serial killer long before that.
Lumen so far is an intriguing new character. She starts out in a damsel in distress position but the show also establishes she isn't stupid (doesn't believe Dexter's first few "just trust me" attempts, and nor should she), brave and inventive enough to come up with the fake suicide attempt in order to trick Dexter and escape. Given her Latin name, the heavy hints about a tragic backstory of her own (even before the last scene and her remarks, there's her reaction to the frat boys in the car) and the comic book aura Dexter's explanation of his action have, I can't help but think of her as a potential Robin to Dexter's Dark Knight. Since the show went to great lengths in s2 to establish that the whole Dark Avenger gig really doesn't work for Dexter and ended up on the framing of Doakes, I'm both captivated and worried as to where this will go. At best, if the show is winding down, with Lumen as a potential successor character. Or maybe it's really about playing out the "can Dexter share his secret with someone without that someone being evil or going evil and thus ending dead in the season fnale?" scenario.
Incidentally, Dexter not killing Lumen and going out of his way to find another solution: human progress since season 2, though it has to be said Lumen as opposed to Doakes doesn't hate him and isn't a cop likely to be believed. Also I think he might have seen a bit of Rita and his mother in her, only Lumen is the woman he could keep from a gory death. (So far.)
I'm really worried as to where the LaGuerta/Angel/Internal Affairs plot might be going.
ide_cyan pointed out that smarmy supervisor's "he said you give the best blowjob in Miami" crack sounds as if he's about to blackmail her for this, and LaGuerta afterwards with Quinn sounds more upset instead of icily angry which would have been the more likely reaction to Quinn's stunt. Otoh, did like the scene with Angel and Lopez in the hospital, which felt very real.
Lastly: Harrison as the new version of Dexter giving donuts to his collegues made me grin.
