On a Dexter-unrelated note, my Yuletide experience this year went somewhat like this: Prompt: asks for characters A, B and C. Yours truly: writes A, B and C, but also D, who is supposed to only have a cameo but suddenly shows up all over the place and thus will completely give away who wrote this story to anyone who ever read something by me in the fandom in question.

...I fail at cunning disguises.

Now, on to Miami, haven (albeit only until they meet Dexter) for serial killers.

First of all, clumsy explosition is clumsy as Deb unknowingly analyses Dexter's and Lumen's relationship for the benefit of the audience, just in case we hadn't gathered already it was serious. What I did like was that her rattling off possible identities for Lumen's accomplice were in fact all roles Dexter played for Lumen this season, in turn and sometimes at the same time - father/brother/lover. The other interesting thing is that the episode rather pointedly has him talk about Deb with Lumen a lot, which feeds into my two theories about potential outcomes - either that Lumen will sacrifice herself for Dexter (Liddy suggesting the reverse, Dexter confessing for Lumen's sake, also could foreshadow that) so that he can keep his family, or that it will be a Deb versus Lumen confrontation testing Deb's newfound sympathy for vigilantes versus her old cop ethics.

Liddy's fate was a complete non-surprise; as a non-regular finding out Dexter's secret, he would obviously be killed before being able to reveal it. The blood on Quinn's shoes, otoh, was a nice touch, and opens a new area for speculation. Dexter in his episode heard from Deb she does in fact have ongoing feelings for Quinn. (Which the show didn't really sell to me, but that's another matter.) Methinks as opposed to Liddy, whose demise was never a question, this might result in a dilemma for Dexter: he'll be in a situation where he could frame Quinn for Liddy's death (shouldn't be that hard - Liddy extracted money from Quinn, they were seen together repeatedly, they were also seen arguing, now there's the blood on Quinn's shoes ), but because of what that might do to Deb, especially given her romantic track record, he could abstain. Which in turn would make things that much harder for himself.

Lumen captured by Jordan Chase: I would be annoyed about a turn that makes her a damsel if I weren't 99% sure that just before Dexter manages to track down Lumen and Jordan Chase, Lumen will kill Chase. Though Dexter will then pick up the knife, resulting in one of the two above mentioned scenarios - either as he's about to be arrested Lumen takes responsibility for all the killings, and/or Deb will have to decide whether to arrest her or let her go. [profile] abigail_n also pointed out that if Deb is faced with the watered-down version of the truth about her brother - i.e. not Dexter the serial killer but Dexter the brave avenger for love, which is what she speculates Lumen's accomplice is in this episode - she could cover for him in a way she wouldn't if she'd found him with random victim #1435.

Lastly: Quinn's idea of a compliment and declaration of love turns out to be the same as C.S. Lewis, who complimented Joy Gresham on her "masculine qualities" and John Lennon's who told Yoko Ono "you're like a bloke in drag, just like a mate". (The two ladies in question laughed, if you're curious.) I am utterly unsurprised that Quinn, too, belongs in the club of men who think they can pay a woman no higher compliment than telling her she's just like a man. I suppose bringing back Anton is out of the question, show? Pretty please?
