selenakPirates or no pirates: I'm still undecided. For one thing, my beloved Elizabeth Swann won't be in the film, and she was the reason why I watched that trilogy, actually. I mean, I liked most other characters as well, and the whole concept, but to me those films were Elizabeth's story. Which I actually thought had a satisfying (to me, imo as always) ending, so it's not that I need her to get another movie, I'm completely content we've seen the last of her, but still, lack of Elizabeth means lack of inducement to see the film.
Then I think, self, maybe you'll love the new characters, especially the Penelope Cruz one, just as much. Maybe. But the problem there is that trailer and publicity have left me with the impression they're playing Jack Sparrow as the main character. And I'm sorry, but I suspect that might be a major mistake. Trickster characters like Jack should never be main characters, or they lose some components that are crucial to their charm. Their unpredictability, for starters. (This is why, back in my Highlander days, I never wanted a Methos spin-off. And why, in most fandoms when people say, "I wish the show was about *insert morally ambigious trickster character X*" I think, I don't wish that at all, even if I love X best. Trickster characters are never better when they have regular hero characters to play off against, to contrast with, to confuse or enlighten or bedazzle.
And thus endeth my grand theory on tricksters, or argument to myself against watching the latest Pirates of the Carribean. That, and I suspect Johnny Depp might be tired of the role by now and is just doing it because he knows where his bread is buttered, and he has a family to support, after all.
Then again, Geoffrey rush and Ian McShane. Together. Arghh!
