Show, I've missed you. Why all these hiatuses (hiati?)?
Politics and power plays are just the best, and in this episode we get them on every level, from Jackie turning her defeat into victory by having a stroke, complete with guilt tripping both Peter and Alicia, to Eli having to choose (and of course he picks ambition) to Alicia's anger at Mike the Lying Panelist combined with her Jackie struggle and possibly the recent house-related nostalgia wave combining to her urging Peter to campaign for governor. Actually I don't think the nostalgia has much, if anything to do with it; Alicia and Peter had their harmonious moments in recent episodes, but in this episode, Alicia's mood was all steely determination to end Mike. (Incidentally, going by the elevator scene I think the Mike loathing tipped the scales for Peter, too, but that's a side issue.) That, and I think part of Alicia actually enjoys participating in the political game, and has missed it. Especially since my speculation about Alicia temporarily getting Will's job did not come to anything so far, I'm now wondering about her ending up campaigning for the State's Attorney's office herself if Peter does win (he can't hold both positions at the same time, right?) next season. Or Diane could do that, but much as the show has toyed with hinting at Diane's own prospects (becoming a judge, or not), she loves leading her firm too much to give it up, plus there were the occasional Hillary Clinton comparisons which would mean Alicia has to get her own political office sooner or later.
The case of the week: I had a feeling it would be one of the girls after all, though I was afraid it would be Alicia's client. In terms of ongoing arcs, though, it was mostly about Cary's growing dissatisfaction with his current job and the easy way of alliances forming then turning against each other once the three girls' interests do not allign any longer. Given the subplot with Will, I wonder whether we'll see what was her name again once more? I'd be for that, I liked her. (Also I wonder whether she was originally meant to be Lisa Edelstein's character and then they couldn't get her back and the role was rewritten.) And not just because I'm prepped to root for anything indicating there won't be a resurgence of Will/Alicia any time soon. :)
Also: is there a support group for disbarred lawyers or did the show make that up for satirical purposes?

I think putting Alicia into office next season would be much too early -- that would seem like more of an endgame for the show than a pressing concern.
Jackie's stroke seems to have left her remarkably unscathed. I wonder if they're downplaying the consequences because they might be about to kill her off.

Date: 2012-04-16 12:57 pm (UTC)re: office for Alicia - I agree it would be more of a closing point but a campaign on this show lasts a whole season anyway, and - do we know how many seasons the show has guaranteed?
Jackie's stroke: at first I thought she faked it entirely, but then the hospital would have noticed, presumably, so there must have been something. Your guess of her being about to be killed off sounds plausible enough, because I don't think there's much more they can do with her; Grace and Zack, while not above using Alicia's struggle with Jackie for some gains in Zack's case, are clearly siding with their mother, and Peter when she's not under immediate threat of health has taken Alicia's side as well. Jackie's current victory can't last if she recovers, but if she dies it will make for an overall Florrick family guilt trip.

Date: 2012-04-16 10:20 pm (UTC)Most US shows are always at the mercy of ratings for renewal, so there are no guarantees, but I don't think the showrunners would push for Alicia's political career to happen too early because to be plausible as a natural character development.
