And the season finale. Which is odd. It somehow doesn't feel like it. This was a very transitionary season; not that things didn't happen, but it still feels like mostly build up for the next one.

Case of the week: I was going to complain that Louis Canning was over the top and clumsy in the way he tried to use his illness as a bonding factor with the disabled judge, but since we later found out he was only stalling for time and acting as a distraction, that's not really a problem. Anyway, he and Patty Nyholme were indeed a fun team, though I have to say they showed up the odd disconnect in this season - they're not exactly arc antagonists, this wasn't a long expected showdown and could have happened at any point.

Best visual of the week: the awkward elevator party, no question. In terms of Alicia's overall development, I suppose you could say she had an arc this season: she tried the road not taken, had her affair with Will, found out it caused more trouble than it was worth, not least because of different emotional investment (as in: she cares for Will but doesn't love him, he loves her), has patched up relationships with Peter to a diplomatic allies status quo, has come full circle going from prop to player in his political ambition and has gone from fallout and rift to reconciliation with Kalinda. Becoming friends with Cary again and bringing him back to the firm as he once left after their competition which also closes a circle. The visual of Alicia standing in front of her old house going is obviously going for a parallel with the end of s1 (where the choice was between picking up the phone with WIll on the line or going on stage with Peter), only this time it's not between two men but - what? Possible-reconstruction-of-family and current status quo? Not sure.

As you all know, I'm not a Will fan, but he did a lot of growing up this season, and I thought had a clear delineated arc towards accepting responsibility and drawing the consequences, not repeating the same mistakes over and over again. He's also the current occupant in the best buddy slot with Kalinda, and I wonder whether or not this will change now that Kalinda and Alicia have made up and Kalinda and Cary could make up.

Eli: doomed to life as comic relief and also scenes that feel increasingly random, like the one with Jackie. I mean, what? Alicia came clearly on board with the campaign and never said she'd go off board unless a scene was cut in which she did from the previous episode? Or was Eli just in the mood to do Alicia a favour with the house because he likes her so much? It felt weird and random. Well, and obv. set up for the later scene indicating Jackie isn't just faking but genuinenly ill, which makes me suspect she won't survive long into the next season.

Kalinda's husband, first mentioned by Blake back in s2, turning out to be a telephone menace and about to become a real one: not surprising at all, though I want a good explanation as to why she didn't simply tear the cheque to shreds which I'm not sure I'll get. Also, just a guess: whoever will open the door next season won't be the husband himself but a third party, because that's how this kind of set up works if I know my thrillers and tv shows. Kalinda will shoot before being able to stop herself and so the next season will start with Allicia having to defend her in a trial about this shooting (could be for murder, could be just for injury) with Kalinda having trouble to explain, if she's even willing to, because she wasn't expecting Third Party to show up; meanwhile, the menacing husband (former) will lurk around and bedevil our heroines for maximum half a season, because then I think he'll be taken out by Lamont Bishop whose menace role has been build up far longer and who is also partly Lockhart & Gardner's fault for doing business with him (which includes our heroines). All this is entirely spoiler free speculation on my part, but if any of it becomes true, you heard it here first.

Lana Delaney-Lamont Bishop plot: un-wrapped up, hence my suspicion of all the relevant scenes this season as set up for the next season.

Lastly: Peter handled the Patty and Louis Canning interrogation like a pro, not falling for any of the suggestive lead-ins even before delivering his trump card. Methinks even Diane was a bit impressed. I do like it when people get to be competent. (Alas, poor Eli.)

I hadn't thought about Jackie's actualfax illness and its ramifications on next season; I still think she faked the initial cause of the hospitalization but I agree that she is not faking her newer problems.

That was the first time I've even had an inkling of like of Peter; I admit to watching that part multiple times.
