selenakBy a most fortunate coincidence, I had just rewatched X-Men: First Class when stumbling across the confirmation of a rumor that's been going around for a while (i.e. now it's official) regarding the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past: we're going to get both sets of Magnetos and Xaviers in that one. Now, much as I enjoyed the young 'uns, the thought of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reunited on screen once more makes my heart go pittypat. I hope it's for more than a cameo appearance at the start or end; if the film keeps indeed switching between the two timelines the premise offers, there should be.
Now, me being me, I wasn't content with being thrilled. My next thought was: so that means we're going to get Rebecca Romjin as older Mystique as well, right? (Shouldn't be a problem; she already did a cameo appearance in First Class.) With thought number 3: I want a scene between older Raven and older Charles as much as I want older Magneto and Xavier interactions. Because First Class developed Mystique so much, and gave us this rich new background for her and Charles as adopted siblings and each other's first other mutants. Now continuity between First Class and X1-3 has always had its headaches, but actually we never had a scene where Mystique (as herself) interacted with Xavier, so that isn't one. There is however the gigantic angst fodder of the fact that the new sibling background for them casts her participation in the climactic Dark Cerebro scene of X2 where she's crucial - playing Stryker - in Magneto's attempt to use Xavier for global genocide in a new light. In my ideal world we'd get some follow-up on this in form of great scenes between Mystique and Xavier, but in actuality, I doubt this will happen. Talk about X2, that is; if they reference any previous movie, it'll be First Class, so if there is talk about the past, it'll more likely involve talking about young Charles not getting his sister's anxiety and thus involuntarily contributing to her issues. I'll take what I can get. Just as long as we get interaction between the two characters.
(Their young selves, too; after all, their farewell on the beach was still a loving one on both sides, so how did we get from there to where Mystique is in X1?)
Anyway, whether or not film canon will give me more siblings Raven and Charles, it's been almost a year since last I read fanfic; does anyone know whether someone has written a story set post X2 which focuses on their interaction?

He has his issues, but I personally loved him as Beast (and I think his TV show just got cancelled).

Date: 2012-11-28 12:31 pm (UTC)I liked Kelsey Grammer as Beast, too, but if I were a casting director with an eye on the budget, I'd say that of all the characters, Beast is the easiest to use the same actor for young and old, because he'll be covered in fur anyway, thus saving a salary.

I mean, not that I don't love the First Class versions, but favourite actors reuniting to play favourite characters is a consummation devoutly to be wished.
I hope for interaction in all possible directions - I mean, if this is post X3 for the Stewart/McKellen/Romjin side of things, I imagine Mystique would have some choice things to say to Magnetos of all ages, for example. And naturally I second your wish for Xavier and Mystique interacting.
Time travel may also explain the discrepancies between the trilogy, Origins: Wolverine and First Class, at least in some vague way.

For what it's worth, I do have some notes towards such a story! Given that I've actually managed to post something every week for a month, the chances that I will actually finish it look better than they did until recently.

Date: 2012-12-03 03:03 pm (UTC)That would make sense, and allow for the apparent differences in the timeline between what was said in the trilogy and what we see in First Class. (Well, sort of. If messing around in time is possible, one assumes it might lead to continuity errors sometimes.)
But also the chance for Mystique to chew Magnetos of all ages out post X3.

I have moved it up the list. There really should be more fic about those two interacting as siblings.
