A book I love no matter what anyone says: The Star of the Guardians trilogy by Margaret Weis. Yes, I know.

A book I loathe no matter what anyone says: Die Angst des Tormans vorm Elfmeter, by Peter Handke. Was tortured with it at university.

An undeservedly obscure book: Armadale by Wilkie Collins.

An undeservedly famous book: Corrections by Jonathan Franzen.

A book I ought to read: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoi. I've been meaning to since eons.

A book I think others ought to read: Tales from Ovid by Ted Hughes.

And speaking of authors deserving to be read, I just came across an article I missed back in May by none other than Kurt Vonnegut, he who wrote Slaughterhouse Five and as an American GI in WWII ending up in German captivity, witnessing the bombing of Dresden, has had, to put it euphemistically, a first-hand experience of war. Read his comments on the goings-on in Iraq here.

Tales from Ovid by Ted Hughes

A terrific choice :-)

My own, however, was somewhat more prosaic, since I picked Im Westen nichts Neues and Max Webers Protestantische Ethik.

You're the only person besides Bill Clinton I've met who brings up Max Weber in casual conversation, so I'm impressed.*g*

And go you with the Remarque! He deserves to be read again.
