In which someone learns you can't go back to your old life, and it's not Emma.

Emma learns more magic, though, by the Yoda approved practical demonstration via peril and stress method. I have to admit that when Regina explained her spell book was written in Elvish and Emma said she can't read that, I mentally added "because Disney doesn't have the rights to Sindarin and Quenya yet; the Professor was too much anti-Mouse to sell them to us back in the day". Anyway, considering the audience did see Rumplestilskin's teaching methods, "bully" is putting it mildly; Emma is lucky Regina didn't make her rip out the heart of a unicorn. More seriously, the fact that Emma does trust Regina as a teacher and Regina isn't jealous of Emma's magic potential says a lot about how far they've come in their relationship with each other.

Meanwhile, the main plot is about Hook in the year that he alone remembers and about Hook in the present, guest starring Smee (welcome back, Smee! I must admit I'm relieved you did not stay a rat or die a rat. That was one of Mr. Gold's nastier actions) and Ariel. Backstory!Ariel has more personality than during her last outing, though the whole true love for Eric thing still suffers from them not having said more than three sentences to each other on screen. Hook returning to piracy during that year wasn't a surprise (he'd said as much to Emma), and makes for a parallel to Regina's mid s2 falling of the attempt at redemption wagon; going back to comforting routines simply is easier. Only they weren't comforting anymore, not to do and not to look at. It didn't escape me that Blackbeard was actually made up to look like traditional Captain Hook from various Peter Pan movies and the stage play. (Minus, err, a hook.) Considering we still don't know who sent Hook to Emma and how Hook made it across worlds, I assume this won't be the last flashback to Hook's year, and of course with all the unanswered questions about where the Jolly Roger is now, I expect this to be a plot point, too.

Present day: David deciding that he is going to be the fun grandpa, even if the competition is a real pirate, cracked me up. Incidentally, I originally assumed Emma saying that it was Henry who didn't want to be left with Charming & Snow because Hook was more fun would be revealed as a fib on Emma's part, and that the truth was Emma didn't want Henry to bond with his grandparents because she's still set on leaving. But apparantly not? Anyway, David's traffic endangering ploy worked, even if I have to point out that technically, Emma is still the Sheriff, but since she hasn't actually done the job since The Outsider in s2 (and that was the only time in s2 where she did), I suppose it's his now by right of actually doing it.

Also: note that Regina early in the episode has done a protection spell around Snow's apartment (which everyone trusts her to do) and at the end of same is having dinner with Emma, Henry, Snow and Charming with everyone taking it for granted she's there. We've come far, indeed.

Trivia: I only found it yesterday Ginnifer Godwin is actually rl pregnant (and married to Josh Dallas). Presumably that's the reason why Snow is, but you know, it works within the story.

I really do love how Dallas and Gilmore play off each other, even (maybe especially) in a silly subplot.

And while I know there's only so much we can surmise about actors' from their onscreen personas, it does make me 'awww' to know that Dallas and Goodwin are having a kid together, since the show makes it seem like he'll be an adorable dad.
