...and speaking of memes, if you have topics you want me to ramble about, please say so here!

Your main fandom this year? I remain a multifandom person. Of my many fandoms, The Americans ending, very impressively so, and Doctor Who getting a new Doctor and new companions stands out in my fannish mind, but I wouldn’t call either my „main“ fandom of the year.

Your favourite film watched this year?: Sheikh Jackson, an Egyption movie, which I watched as part of this year’s Munich Film Festival and reviewed here. I loved it to bits, from first minute to last, all the characters were awesomely written and performed, the two timelines worked, and when I recently did my collection of music and dance sequences in non-musicals, I was very frustrated to find Khaled doing the moon walk wasn’t available on YouTube. 😊

Your favourite book read this year?: certainly the ones which moved and made me think most were Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quarted, reviewed here. (Before anyone asks, no, I haven’t seen the tv version, because it’s not available in my part of the world yet.)

Your favourite tv show of the year?: Star Trek: Discovery. It's not perfect, but no ST show ever was, and I went from "hm" to "like" to "love" within a season.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?: marathoning The Exorcist‘s two seasons only to have it cancelled certainly was, err, an experience. But while neither season was actually broadcast in 2018 (the second one ended in December 2017), it just might have been the most viscerally gripping new-to-me fandom discovery.

Your biggest fandom disappointment?: Minette Walters writing a really bad historical novel. ☹

Your tv boyfriend of the year?: To my surprise, Graham from Doctor Who. If you don’t like him, don’t feel obliged to tell me so in comments. I adored him this season.

Your tv girlfriend of the year?: Charlotte Ritter from Babylon Berlin, and this is the first time my pick in this category is a homegrown girl. But I adored her, too. Runner-up: Michael Burnham. It’s so good to have a Star Trek heroine to cheer for again!

Your biggest squee moment of the year?: The unabashed fanservice that was Sense8: Amor Vincit Omnia, celebrating friendship, love, and the human ability to connect not in spite of, but with their differences.

The most missed of your old fandoms?: You know, tumblr events actually brought several missed friends from various fandoms back to dw world. Also, I used to reply with „Star Trek, in its various incarnations“ to this question, but no longer, because of Discovery. Which not only provides me with a new canon, but also, via [community profile] spacefungusparty, with a community that has both old Trekkers like myself and people for whom Star Trek: Discovery is their first or second Star Trek experience. Otoh, in the mythical case of having a lot of leisure time next year, I’ve been wondering about maybe doing a Farscape rewatch….

The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to?: The Terror. I’ve been hearing only good things.

In which we get a finale that is pure fanservice. Which I don't mean as a criticism; I loved it. But it's pure fannish id, which of course is true for much of the show anyway, and part of the appeal.

I did not think such things were possible )

Sense8 will get a two hour finale!

This was great news to start my day with. Meanwhile, have a fanfic rec:

Not a new story, but a new-to-me story from 2010's Yuletide, something for Norse mythology lovers (but also accessible if you have zilch knowledge about Norse mythology!), with a terrific take on the Odin and Loki relationship especially:

A Game of Shapes (6883 words) by Bagheera
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Norse Mythology
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Óðinn | Odin, Loki (Norse Mythology), Thor, Baldr | Baldur
Additional Tags: Genderbending, Shapeshifting, Magic, Death
Summary:

Someone has stolen little Baldr and replaced him with a changeling child. Thor and Loki go on a quest to rescue Baldr, but not before long, they're joined by a one-eyed giantess.

With reality continuing to outstrip the most vicious political satire in grotesqueness on an hourly basis, some things to enjoy regardless:

Lana Wachawksi about the Sense 8 Christmas Special:

Patti Smith on singing at the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Back home with the APs, busy unpacking, washing, and soon, ironing; still, I've just had a first look at the Yuletide fandoms and characters tag list, and am pretty excited, since in addition to the requests I knew I'd make some more will be possible, due to other people kindly nominating the fandoms in question. Also, I'll be able to offer plenty. Currently I'm composing one list of fandoms I can offer to write in without caveats, and another for possible treats which I could write in, but only if a prompt pushes a button (and if there's enough time, of course).

(I also noticed someone nominated Sunset Boulevard and specifically Norma and Max, which made me smile, since I've written that story some years ago.)

While hiking through the Southern Tyrolian mountains I couldn't get online often, but I did notice the announcement that Sylvester McCoy, the Seventh Doctor himself, will be joining the cast of Sense8 next season. This makes me wildly curious as to which character JMS has written for him. (And the W's, naturally, but JMS is the one whom I know actually watched Classic Who for sure, so.) Also, are there any DW/Sense 8 crossovers in existence? Given Freema A. playing an important role in s1, there probably are, but I haven't checked out the fanfiction for ages.

Given that I'm currently doing the Star Trek mene, various soundtracks have been on my mind, and hearing composer James Horner died carried that sadness you feel when a stranger who gave you something through his art is suddenly taken away.
Here are ten of his most famous film scores.

I couldn't join Remix this year. (Though I did provide my stories to Remix Madness, if someone wants to have a go.)
But over the weekend, I finished my story for the History Exchange 2015, and the beta just came back, so I edited and posted it. Checking, I realised there are only 13 participants in the exchange, which makes it the anti Yuletide, I suppose! Ah well, hopefully the stories resulting will be read by a few people more. I'm very much looking forward to the other 12 stories! Incidentally, in order to brush up on my canon knowledge for my story, so to speak, I read one of the newer (i.e. published since the last time I did research) biographies on the subject. By Desmond Seward, and ended up being very annoyed indeed about him pulling out that old chestnut, "it's totally X's fault that her son Y was gay, because she was a strong personality and had a close relationship with him! Mothers with strong personalities who are close to their sons make men gay! And did I mention? She totally ruined hm for all other women and made him gay!" In a biography published in 2011, no less. That's it, Seward, I'll read no more biographies from you.

On a less backwards note, Sense8 icons! And very beautiful ones, too.

Without spoilers: I liked it, depite some obvious flaws. Not least because what it did well, it did really well.

...currently watching Sense8, and in the middle of a scene wherein two of our heroines spy in the lair apartment of one of the potential (well, pretty obvious at this point) villains, the character played by Freema Aygeman discovers a photo of said villain with a prominent rl character.

"Oh my god", says she, half mocking, half serious, "BFF with Cheney! He's got to be evil."

JMS: still not over the shock of Dubya liking his show and ensuring it won't happen again. :)
