This show is currently my comfort food in a stressful time. With shards.

Am pleased Regina enslaving Sydney for a second time has immediate consequences, to wit, he finally develops an agenda of his own - getting free - and betrays her to the new queen in town in order to achieve it? And it works? Which, btw, also offers a neat bit of characterisation re: the Snow Queen. She doesn't appear to screw minions over for the hell of it or be a gratitious sadist, keeping her bargain with Sydney instead of keeping him around just because she could.

On the other hand, she definitely believes in the Rumplestilskin school of magic teaching, given the whole thing with Elsa. (Though finding courage to break out of chains is still preferable to tearing out hearts of unicorns, I suppose.) And I'm really curious how they'll pull off the explanation for when and how she came to Our World. We've established it wasn't with either curse, and now it's revealed she knew Emma when Emma was a teen. There are of course possibilities, depending on just when she ended up here, but since she was still in the magical world when David was already a young man, there's only a narrow window. At a guess: it was through the Fantasia sorceror's hat, and Anna did it as a banishment after things went sour between the Snow Queen and the sisters, but however this worked, it also meant the hat ended up in Our World (unusable until magic came back), which is why Rumple didn't look for it anymore until now. Just how this thing with Emma's memories worked, though, is beyond me.

Oh, and may I say: I squeed unbecomingly when the Snow Queen took the shard from the mirror. Because to repeat myself from an earlier review, I am so happy they found a way to have their cake and eat it, i.e. use Elsa and Anna from Frozen but do a more Andersen-like Snow Queen regardless. Now who will be Kai? Elsa would make the most sense, but wouldn't be as emotionally effective as a regular. Henry can't be kidnapped again this soon. The Emma flashbacks already had a Gerda-and-the-Robber-Girl vibe, so Emma seems to be the obvious Gerda, but Regina as Kai wouldn't work for me (and be bad for her road to redemption, since she needs to continue be responsible for her own deeds, not get them dictated by enchantment). More original would be Emma a Kai and Regina, now that she's finally admitted to some positive feeling re: Emma after Emma (having the patience of a saint) pursued her through the episode, as Gerda.

Snow early in the episode bringing up not only baby Emma's loss but baby Neal's instant abduction by Zelena reminded me that her overprotectiveness isn't just a parent comedy device - it's not paranoia when they're really prone to take your kids the moment they're born. This said, I'm glad they let the overprotectiveness come to an end here, and amused by Snow assuming (along with the viewers) David set the Will breakout up as an adventure distraction when actually he didn't, while Will just plays along with her assumption. (BTW: evidently he was looking for the White Rabbit.)

So is Lily any relation of Carrot's from Discworld?
