I'm in Garmisch right now, due to a festival of sorts in honour of the late Michael Ende (author of the Never-Ending Story, Momo and a couple of other wonderful fantasy tales, some of which were translated into English and made into bad movies), who was born here. Yesterday evening was spent full of recitals of poetry, songs and short fables, all very well done in a cabaret style, in a circus tent in the Kurpark, with some of the artists walking amomg the audience.

The only downside of this is that my laptop and the hotel hate each other and won't agree on my laptop supposedly being able to get wireless LAN. Which means I'm sitting in an internet café right now. Said café has a browser which is not gmail compatible. So I can't get my emails. And I see the Londothon assignments are out. Rats. Ah well - tomorrow I'll be back in Munich.

the Never-Ending Story

Among my favorite books of all time!

Momo

Never heard of this one.

made into bad movies

I took one look at The Never-Ending Story movie and ran screaming from the room. "Dreadful" is an understatement!

The book though - I re-read it once a year or so, love it more every time.

Momo: is about a little girl versus The Grey Gentlemen, who scared me very much as a child (but in a good way), and works equally well on a meta level as a meditation on the art of storytelling. Also, Master Hora is the most well-rounded, non-annoying Wise Old Mentor type since Gandalf, and some of the imagery - the hour flowers (that doesn't rhyme in German, "Stundenblume"), for example, symbolizing the time of each individual, which get stolen and consumed by The Grey Gentlemen.

You weren't the only one who screamed. Poor Michael Ende really, really hated that movie. It poisoned his last years.

How not-gmail-compatible is it? Did it give you a message saying "Gmail doesn't support this browser" and let you try anyway, or just refuse to do anything? (Or did it give you that message and not work when you did try?

I just ask because I assume there are also browsers that gmail doesn't work with at all, but I've had gmail inform me that it doesn't support Mozilla but allow me to log in anyway, and haven't had any problems.

It gave me that message and it didn't work when I did try. Ah well. Now I'm back, and catching up with my mail.

squee! I love TNES (the book). I didn't know he had other ones in English. The films are not good. I made all my American friends who liked the films read the book. I'd love to read more about the festival -- I don't know anything about Ende's life.

At least his first famous children's book, Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer (literary "Jim Button and Lucas the Train Engineer", but I'm not sure that was the English title) got translated, but I'm not sure about the other ones - I'd have to check. Though I guess Momo might have made it across the Atlantic, too.

More about the festival coming now that I'm back.

Festival fun for all

Great fun! I love The Neverending Story - and the movie was so beyond dreadful that I have blocked it from my memory. :-D

Have good times.
