Elementary 3.15
Feb. 21st, 2015 10:27 amThis one didn't even pretend to be a whodunit but went for the whydunist approach as far as the case of the week was concerned. But really it was about Joan's continuing dealing with the 2.13 fallout and the Holmes & Watson friendship.
Which is lovely. I'm glad I interpreted Holmes' expression at the end of the last episode correctly and he WAS worried about Watson's decision being made for all the wrong reasons, even if it gives him what he wanted (i.e. sharing a house with Watson again). As ever, the show is about negotiating and balance in relationships, so the end result - Joan acknowledging she wants a safe place right now but also acknowledging that she still needs a space of her own instead of cutting herself off from all she used to want when she moved out, and her solution to this being the creation of the basement as separate space that's still close - felt exactly right.
(BTW: I'm always told New York flats are a) tiny and b) horrendously expensive. So while I can see how Sherlock with his millionaire father could lease Joan's apartment, how could Joan afford it in the past? It looks huuuge.)
re: case of the week, this is the second time this season we have a British character getting a dig in at American gun laws. (After Kitty with Marcus Bell in episode 3 or so.) I must say I amusedly sympathize. Also, is this formula for victim compensation something that actually happens in the US or did the writers make that up?
