In which Holmes is a suspect, and Watson is on the case.

If it runs long enough, every detective series will go there: the story where the detective is a suspect, his partner has to figure out whether or not he did it, and the detective himself doesn't know becaus blackouts. Elementary being Elementary, the episode was made not by the mystery itself (if the show wanted the audience to be truly unsure whether or not Sherlock did it, even completely on drugs, I think they would have made Maria Guieterrez someone he'd have had a motive for killing, like, say, someone he suspected at the time of having killed Irene? Since this happened post Irene's "death" and pre Sherlock checking himself into rehab, and we already know he came close to killing Moran full sober when he thought Moran did it). What made the episode, as ever, were the Holmes and Watson friendship scenes, Watson's quiet certainty and support (and calling him out when he did the broodathon that this was sliding into masochistic self pity), and another fantastic acting showcase by Johnny Lee Miller throughout.

Oscar, yet another old acquaintance of Holmes' from the bad old drug days, was significantly different from, say, Rhys the drug dealer, whom Holmes had liked; objectively Oscar did nothing worse than Rhys but I think the difference is that Holmes sees himself in Oscar (very evident in the last scene) and didn't in Rhys, hence Rhys sympathy and Oscar loathing.

Gregson and Bell were great with the quiet support as well, and I was v. amused that Holmes was horrified that Joan had asked Bell for his help. It's getting to the point where I think "kiss him already".

The acting in this episode blew me away. And the final scene left me wanting to give them all a standing ovation or something. There was so much raw emotion all over the place but it never veered into melodrama or went out of character for me and wow. Yeah. This was some powerful tv.
